Full Job Description
UNC Health is seeking an experienced Registered Nurse (RN) leader to provide strategic and operational oversight of inpatient Care Management services across UNC Hospitals.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead initiatives focused on patient-centered care, care progression, throughput, capacity management, and operational excellence
  • Partner with physicians, nursing, and interdisciplinary teams to advance quality, efficiency, and organizational goals
  • Lead, develop, and inspire Care Management staff to achieve team and organizational outcomes

Preference will be given to RN candidates with:

  • Acute care Utilization Management and operational improvement knowledge
  • Current Care Management certification


Summary:
Responsible for assisting the Regional Director of Clinical Care Management in overall operations of Care Management Department functions through daily and long-term oversight of department activities at UNC Hospitals. Provides management direction to designated department leadership and staff members. Assists Regional Director in ensuring that the department achieves its goals and objectives by engaging internal and external stakeholders in care coordination and outcomes management processes. Accountable for departmental Personnel Management, Fiscal Management, Communication, Customer Service, Goals/Outcomes Management, and Quality/Process Improvement Initiatives to ensure high level of quality consistent with organizational standards. Reports to the Regional Director of Care Management.

Responsibilities:
1. Communication - Provides resources and support for direct reports in communicating and clarifying roles/responsibilities. Develops and maintains positive relationships with key individuals internally and externally to enhance overall Care Management Departmental processes.
2. Customer Service - Assists Regional Director in establishing systems, processes, people, and education that will improve internal and external customer satisfaction and positive results for the department and institution. Serves as a role model and leads direct reports in supporting team, departmental, and institutional expectations in customer service excellence.
3. Fiscal Management - Collaborates with Regional Director in preparation, monitoring, and discussing department budget with senior leadership. Oversight of Patient Assistance Funds and Flex Funding activities. Monitors approved budget versus actual expenditures to reconcile as needed to achieve cost effective use of resources. Tracking and trending of departmental productivity statistics.
4. Goals/Outcomes Management - Collaborates with Regional Director to establish goals for the department that are congruent with hospital goals. Reviews overall department performance to ensure staff are meeting or exceeding target outcome goals. Reconciles the needs of the Managers and institution relative to department initiatives. Determines and oversees successful implementation of optimum methods to operationalize system-identified goals and objectives. Works closely with medical staff leadership and other staff to ensure appropriate medical staff involvement in care management efforts. Assists Regional Director in ensuring the collecting, analyzing, evaluating, measuring, and presenting of care management operational data. Uses data to take corrective action as needed to benefit the department and/or institution outcomes.
5. Personnel Management - Oversees personnel functions for designated Care Management Department team(s). Provides leadership and mentoring to direct reports for various staffing issues, i.e. staff qualifications, competencies, staffing levels (hiring/firing), workloads and productivity, staff development, regulatory compliance, continuing education, and performance appraisal.
6. Quality & Compliance - Leads department specific quality improvement initiatives to ensure compliance with hospital regulatory requirements. Develops appropriate departmental policies and procedures oversees departmental auditing requirements. Ensures best practices for various departmental roles.

Education Requirements:
• Master's degree in Nursing, Master's degree in Social Work (MSW), or Master's degree in related field.
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
• If hired after February 1, 2024, must have valid NC RN license or LCSW/LCSW-A to practice in the state of NC.
ACM or CCM certification required within 2 years of hire.
Professional Experience Requirements:
• Seven (7) years of experience in Care Management. Two (2) years of healthcare management experience. Will consider relevant combination of management and leadership experience.
Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements:
• Knowledge of TJC, federal and state standards and health care operations Strong communication, software, project management, leadership, organizational, computer and analytical skills Ability to build and maintain collaborative relationships at all levels Critical thinking and problem resolution skills
