The City of Yonkers Office of the Corporation Counsel is accepting applications for an Assistant Corporation Counsel position.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
This is an entry level professional legal position involving responsibility for assisting the Corporation Counsel in drafting pleadings, motions, discovery demands and legal instruments, preparing opinions, assisting in Civil Service disciplinary proceedings, real property transactions and performing a wide variety of other basic professional legal tasks. Must be capable of handling a small civil trial or code enforcement proceeding with some supervision. Direct supervision is received from administrative personnel. General supervision is exercised over assigned personnel. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative Only)
Drafts legal instruments, pleadings and papers;
Assists in preparing opinions;
Prepares legal work involved in settling claims;
Drafts local laws, and ordinances and resolutions;
Assists in the investigation, preparation and presentation of Workers Compensation cases;
Assists in the legal work involved in tax lien foreclosure proceedings;
May supervise the secretarial and clerical staff;
Researches and prepares briefs;
Assists in a wide variety of legal work as assigned;
Conducts examinations before trial, and 50-H hearings and may appear in Court as
requested, including code enforcement, i.e. prosecution of violations of City Code in City Court.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Good knowledge of the principles and practices of common law and of state and federal laws
pertaining to municipal activities;
basic knowledge of civil and criminal procedures and of the rules of evidence;
working knowledge of the principles of public administration;
skill in preparation and drafting of legal instruments, legislative bills, ordinances and resolutions; initiative; tact; courtesy; good professional and administrative judgment; good oral and written
communication skills;
physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation from a law school of recognized standing and possession of a license to practice law as an attorney and counselor in the courts of the State of New York within six (6) months from the date of appointment.
Salary Range: The anticipated annual salary range for this position is $85,000 to $109,000.
