What you'll doCore Responsibilities
- Succession Planning & Knowledge Transfer: Actively engage in the transition of Controller duties over a several year period, including taking a leading role on special projects, documentation of key control processes, and strategic financial initiatives as directed by the current Controller
- Financial Reporting & Close: Ensure timely and accurate monthly financial close and upstream reporting of subsidiary results to the public company parent
- Budgeting & Forecasting: Execute monthly forecasting and annual budgeting processes (covering Balance Sheet, P&L, Cash, and CapEx)
- Cash Management & Revenue Cycle: Oversee Billing and Accounts Receivables, including accurate and timely cash collection and application. Manage work production documentation for recording revenue and subcontractor costs
- Procurement & Payables: Direct Accounts Payable activities, including 1099s, W-9 verification, diversity reporting, and unclaimed property returns
- Tax & Fixed Assets: Verify and/or prepare various tax filings, including Sales & Use Tax and Property Tax Returns. Manage capital requisition and fixed asset tracking
- Job Costing: Create and maintain accurate job cost reporting
Leadership & People Management
- Team Leadership: Manage, mentor, and support accounting and finance personnel
- Field Support: Provide management, mentoring, and support to personnel in field offices responsible for transaction input and related operational activities
Compliance, Control & Audit
- Controls: Support and enforce SOX compliance and Internal Controls
- Audit Management: Serve as a key point of contact for external and internal audits, as well as miscellaneous audits from various government agencies
- HR Compliance Support: Assist with areas like wage and hour regulations and I-9 verification
- Payroll: Work with corporate on multi-state payroll processing
Strategic & Operational Partnership
- Business Partner: Function as a value-added business partner to the President and/or as requested by the Corporate Office, covering all areas as needed
- Operational Partnership & Field Engagement: Serve as the direct financial partner for Operations, requiring frequent interaction and collaboration with Construction Foremen, Project Managers (PMs), and field leadership to ensure accurate job costing, billing, and project-level financial controls
- Process Improvement: Act as a change agent in both financial and operational areas
- Operational Oversight: Provide process and project management partnership, support, and oversight for select operational areas
What you'll need- Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or Economics
- CPA and/or CMA strongly preferred
- Minimum of 10+ years of progressive experience in accounting or finance, with a significant portion at the Assistant Controller or Director of Finance level
- Proven ability to translate complex financial concepts into actionable insights for operational leaders and non-financial personnel, with a demonstrated history of supporting field-based operations (e.g., construction, services, or manufacturing)
- Construction industry experience strongly preferred, with an understanding of project-based accounting and job costing methodologies
- Familiarity with SOX compliance and internal controls
Additional Qualifications
- SAP S4/HANA experience strongly preferred
- Advance Google Sheets, Microsoft Excel and related MS Office products
- Organized, detail oriented and able to work independently
- Strong organizational skills and ability to handle crisis situations effectively
- Team player, self-motivated and able to work in a fast-paced environment
- Proven ability to interact with a variety of people and work with all levels within the organization in a professional manner
