We are seeking an experienced Assistant Controller to oversee the Accounts Payable function and support financial operations within a fast-paced construction environment. This role is responsible for managing AP processes, job cost accounting, vendor relationships, monthly close activities, and financial controls. The ideal candidate has a strong background in construction accounting, understands project-based financial management, and can lead process improvements while ensuring accuracy and compliance.

What you'll do

  • Oversee daily Accounts Payable operations, including invoice processing, payment approvals, vendor management, and disbursements.
  • Supervise AP staff and ensure timely and accurate processing of subcontractor and vendor invoices.
  • Ensure accurate job cost tracking and support project managers with financial reporting and budget analysis.
  • Assist with monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes, including accruals and account reconciliations.
  • Support preparation of financial statements and management reporting packages.
  • Maintain and strengthen internal controls and accounting procedures. Enforce and support SOX compliance.
  • Coordinate audits and provide requested documentation to external auditors.
  • Collaborate with project management and operations teams to resolve billing, vendor, and cost-related issues.
  • Assist with implementation and optimization of accounting systems and workflows.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local tax requirements related to AP and construction accounting.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives to streamline accounting operations and reporting accuracy.


What you'll need

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • CPA strongly preferred
  • 5+ years of construction accounting experience.
  • Strong knowledge of Accounts Payable, job costing, retainage, progress billing, and subcontractor management.
  • Experience with construction ERP/accounting systems such as Viewpoint, Sage 300/Timberline, Foundation, CMiC, or similar platforms.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP, SOX compliance and internal controls.
  • Advanced Google Sheets and/or Microsoft Excel
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a dynamic environment.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills.

Additional Qualifications
  • Familiarity with AIA billing and percentage-of-completion accounting.
  • Experience leading AP automation or process improvement initiatives.
