Duties & Responsibilities

The Assistant Chief of Hospital Police, under the direction of the Chief of Hospital Police, provides assistance in the direction and oversight of all Hospital Police Department functions, initiatives, and activities across the health care setting(s). The Assistant Chief of Hospital Police plans, manages, and continuously evaluates the security operations of a facility to effectively direct the daily operations of the Hospital Police Department. Partners with the Chief of Hospital Police to promote, implement, and direct a culture of safety, and to formulate and institute
effective strategies and policies that focus on high-quality results, ensuring optimal utilization of resources

Responsibilities:

1. Develops and implements programs, policies, procedural guidelines, evaluative and monitoring techniques to protect employees, patients, residents, visitors and property from crime, vandalism, theft and prevention of related illegal actions.
2. Develops, implements and directs the enforcement of traffic and parking control patterns.
3. Conducts or directs the conduct of security investigations in conjunction with Corporate Security and other law enforcement agencies as directed by Corporate Security; with full cooperation to the Corporate Inspector General in matters affecting that office.
4. Reviews existing security arrangements and effects necessary changes to programmatic content, standards, and reporting systems; performs risk assessment for security-related matters and recommends programs or procedures for implementation; manages security component of the Environment of Care under The Joint Commission accreditation standards.
5. Interviews and selects candidates for all levels of security positions; Administers security in-service training programs for new employees assigned to security functions upon completion of Peace Officer or Watch Person training; Plans and participates in training for employees involved in security activities. Schedules all security personnel to attend required courses at the Corporate Security Police Academy or other venues.
6. Assesses and develops staffing patterns, performance standards, career development pathways and initiates disciplinary action when necessary.
7. Maintains liaison and confers with Associate Director, Associate Executive Director, Department Heads, Corporate Director of Security and external security agencies.
8. Prepares or directs preparation of reports, special studies, and security investigations and participates in meetings, conferences, and seminars appropriate to assigned duties.
9. Coordinates the administrative aspects of external/internal disaster plans including reports of drills and exercises conducted when assigned to these programs.
10. Coordinates the interdepartmental policies between safety management, facilities operations, elevator services contractor(s) and hospital police.

Minimum Qualifications
1. New York State residency (for the duration of employment); and
2. Completion of the NYC Health + Hospitals Assistant Chief of Hospital Police training within six (6) months of appointment; and
3. Possession of a valid New York State motor vehicle driver's license (Note: This license must be maintained for the duration of employment); and
4. Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Criminal Justice, Security Management, Security Administration, or related discipline, and three (3) years of full-time, paid work experience in law enforcement or a security-related position, one (1) year of which must have been in a responsible administrative, managerial or supervisory capacity; or
5. A satisfactory equivalent combination of education and experience, where one (1) year of full-time, paid work experience in law enforcement or security in a responsible administrative, managerial or supervisory capacity equates to 30 college credits. However, all candidates must have a minimum of one (1) year of experience in law enforcement or security in a responsible, administrative, managerial or supervisory capacity; a high school diploma; New York State residency; and a valid New York State motor vehicle driver's license. In addition, the NYC Health + Hospitals Assistant Chief of Hospital Police training must be completed within six (6) months of appointment.

Department Preferences

Paid experience in a security-related position within a healthcare facility is preferred.
