Job Description

SUMMARY OF JOB PURPOSEThe Assistant Chief Juvenile Probation Officer assists in the management and administrative functions of the juvenile probation department. Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred. Must be21 years of age at time of application.Applicants will undergo a law enforcement background investigation prior to being considered and for continued employment.Overtime, shifts, weekend, and holiday work is required. Must be always available to respond to probation-related emergencies.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Assumes management responsibility for all services and activities of the juvenile probation department in the absence of the Chief Juvenile Probation Officer.
  • Assists in the development, evaluation and implementation of policies, procedures, and programs to meet department and court goals and objectives
  • Reviews case files, court reports, treatment plans, screenings, and assessments to determine level of services appropriate.
  • Identifies potential problem areas in cases and provides solutions. Evaluates the most complex cases and determines treatment plans.
  • Performs the duties of a juvenile probation officer.
  • Diffuses potentially assaultive or threatening behavior. Restrains juveniles physically, when necessary, in accordance with local, state and federal regulations.
  • Trains probation officers by providing field supervision, answering questions, and assisting when necessary. Assigns, monitors, and reviews the work of probation officers.
  • Identifies and reports potential child abuse or neglect to the appropriate agency within 24 hours.
  • Assists in the coordination of detention services. Provides shift coverage at the detention center when necessary.
  • Conducts internal audits to determine compliance with department procedures
  • Coordinates and implements correctional and rehabilitative programs.
  • Reviews crime reports, arrests, citations, and letters provided to the juvenile probation department. Gathers and evaluates information regarding alleged criminal offenses committed. Determines the level of action required. Reviews cases with the district attorney and makes recommendations for court action.
  • Represents the juvenile probation department in juvenile delinquency and probation matters. Assists in the negotiation and resolution of sensitive, significant, and controversial issues.
  • Serves as the department firearm range master. Oversees and tracks Nevada Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) requirements for sworn personnel.
  • Maintains knowledge of local, state, and federal programs, resources, and services available to youth and families.
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of the latest trends, techniques, and legal developments in juvenile justice.
  • Manages juvenile probation department vehicle fleet.
  • Represents the department with dignity, integrity, and a spirit of cooperation.

Education and Experience

Education: Bachelor's degree in a related field preferred; or a combination of education and experience
Experience: Minimum 5 years of related work experience; 2 years in a supervisory role, preferred
Certifications: Must maintain a valid Nevada driver's license, Nevada Peace Officer Standard and Training (POST) Category I or II, Range Master Certification, CPR- First Aid Certified
Must maintain any required approvals and designations as required
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge
  • Working knowledge and correct usage of business English including spelling, grammar, punctuation, vocabulary, and formats.
  • Working knowledge of business correspondence formats, record keeping, report preparation, filing methods, and records management techniques.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of supervision, training, and performance evaluation.
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles of juvenile justice, criminal justice, sociology, and psychology as they relate to youth and families.
  • Knowledge of modern methods and techniques for coaching children in need of supervision.
  • Knowledge of interviewing and interrogation techniques, and investigative methods.
  • Working knowledge of personal computer hardware and software including word processing, spreadsheets, and databases for the purposes of creating, editing, and distributing information.
  • Thorough knowledge of Chapters 62 and 432B.220 of the Nevada Revised Statutes (NV Rev Stat 62 and NV Rev Stat 432B.220 (2017)), Elko County School District procedures and policies, and all other applicable federal and state laws and regulations, county ordinances and regulations, department rules and regulations, and relevant court rulings.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT

  • Work is performed in an office setting.
