Job Summary: The Assessment RN is responsible for clinical evaluation and disposition of all patients referred to the Loma Linda University Behavioral Medicine Center. Coordinates contact with the appropriate clinical, hospital and community resources. Coordinates with clinicians and hospital staff to facilitate hospital admissions according to appropriate department guidelines and criteria. Performs other duties as needed.

Education and Experience: Associate`s Degree in Nursing required.Minimum one year of experience in Medical/Surgery required; and, as applicable: (1) Minimum one year of experience in age group preferred, (2) Minimum one year of experience in acute psychiatric of age group preferred, (3) Minimum one year of experience in chemical dependency/detox preferred, (4) Minimum one year of experience in psychiatric intake preferred.

Knowledge and Skills: Basic clinical skills in delivery of nursing care in acute care facility. Good hand eye coordination. Ability to develop positive therapeutic interactions with patient and others; maintain confidentiality; assess patients' conditions, interpret care plan, comprehend appropriate interventions, evaluate patient response to care, teach patients and families. Understanding of patient rights, hospital policy and philosophy of care of patient requiring restraint and/or seclusion. Working knowledge of Insurance and Managed Care criteria; thorough knowledge of BMC and department admission criteria and ability to screen and prioritize patients according to clinical needs. Knowledge of psychotropic medications; knowledge of appropriate age group(s). Able to read; write legibly; speak in English with professional quality; use computer and software programs necessary to the position; troubleshoot and calibrate patient care equipment. Relate and communicate positively, effectively, and professionally with others; be assertive and consistent in following and/or enforcing policies; work calmly and respond courteously when under pressure; collaborate; accept direction. Effectively communicate in English in person, in writing, and on the telephone; think critically; work independently with minimal supervision; perform basic math functions; manage multiple assignments effectively; work well under pressure; problem solve; organize and prioritize workload; recall information with accuracy; pay close attention to detail. Able to distinguish colors and smells as necessary for patient care; hear sufficiently for general conversation in person and on the telephone; identify and distinguish various sounds associated with the workplace/patient care; see adequately to read computer screens, medical records, and written documents necessary to position; discern temperature variances through touch.

Licensures and Certifications: Current and unrestricted California Registered Nurse (RN) license required; and, as applicable: (1) Psychiatric nursing or clinical specialist certification preferred, (2) Chemical dependency nursing certification or specialist preferred. Basic life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association required. 5150 certification preferred.
