Organization and Position Overview

Lilly recently announced a $4.5 billion investment to create the Lilly Medicine Foundry, a new center for advanced manufacturing and drug development. The first-ever facility of its kind, combining research and manufacturing in a single location, the Medicine Foundry will allow Lilly to further develop innovative solutions to optimize manufacturing processes and increase capacity for clinical trial medicines, while also reducing costs and environmental impact.

The Area Engineer will serve as the site subject matter expert (SME) for the Logistics Buildings, Tank Farm, and associated ancillary systems within the Facilities, Utilities, Maintenance & Engineering (FUME) organization. During the project phase, this role will be a key member of the cross-functional project team, supporting design, construction, commissioning, qualification, start-up, and operational readiness for systems associated with the Lilly Medicine Foundry's logistics buildings and tank farm. Once in operation, the Area Engineer will be responsible for ensuring these systems are maintained in a compliant, reliable, cost-effective, and fit-for-use state to meet business and internal customer needs. This role will also drive continuous improvement initiatives, manage annual operating and capital expenditures, and serve as the single point of contact for residents and customers associated with the logistics buildings and tank farm.

Responsibilities:

Serve as the SME with deep technical expertise for assigned systems, including their applications in pharmaceutical manufacturing and support operations, process flow diagrams, key process parameters, and relevant industry trends. Systems may include, but are not limited to:

  • Warehouse / Logistics Infrastructure


  • Electrical Distribution


  • Process Gas Distribution


  • Cold and freezer rooms


  • Sampling, milling, and dispensing suites and equipment


  • Fume Hoods


  • Downflow Booths


  • Safety showers and eyewash stations


  • Air Handling Units (AHU's)


  • WFI (Water for Injectables)

  • Compressed air and breathing air

  • Aqueous Waste and Neutralization


  • Tank Farm Waste (Primary and Secondary)


  • Fresh Solvent Tank Farm (Bulk Storage Tanks and Distribution)


  • Process Gas Distribution


  • N2 (Nitrogen)


  • CO2 (Carbon Dioxide)


  • O2 (Oxygen)


  • Truck unloading and pumping station


  • Fire suppression foam system


  • Ensure assigned processes align with industry requirements and Lilly standards.


  • Support risk assessment activities using available tools, such as Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA).


  • Participate in teams, committees, or individual efforts as needed to support FUME departmental, site, and company goals.


Initial project asset delivery phase and future local capital investment:

  • Lead or participate in projects and changes for systems within the logistics buildings and tank farm, including design, verification activities (IV/OV/PQ), user representation for capital projects, and delivery of local projects.


  • Develop required documentation, such as User Requirements Specifications (URS) and test cases, to demonstrate that systems are properly installed, qualified, started up, and maintained in a state of control.


  • Develop standard operating procedures (SOPs) and other necessary documentation for assigned systems.


  • Contribute to process resource assessments, capital plans, expense budgets, and prioritization activities as appropriate.


Daily support for operations:

  • Monitor systems associated with the logistics buildings and tank farm and maintain KPIs to ensure proper operation and compliance with internal and external requirements.


  • Act as the single point of contact for logistics building and tank farm compliance activities, including deviations, change controls, and CAPAs, in partnership with Operations, Quality Control, Process Engineering, Supply Chain, HSE, and Quality Assurance.


  • Collaborate within the FUME organization to implement efficient and effective maintenance and reliability practices aligned with global engineering standards.


  • Apply hands-on problem-solving skills to quickly resolve equipment failures, troubleshoot issues, lead root cause analysis (RCA) investigations, and guide operations personnel through system issue resolution.


  • Provide internal customer consultation and notifications for issues involving critical utilities and equipment associated with the logistics buildings and tank farm.


  • Ensure corrective and preventive maintenance items are identified in the appropriate tracking systems and completed by required due dates.


  • Provide technical support to FUME, HSE, Process Engineering, Supply Chain, Quality Control, and other partner functions as needed.


  • Lead or participate in capital projects and changes for systems within the logistics buildings and tank farm, including project management, design, resource planning, budget adherence, and qualification/verification activities (IQ/OQ/PQ).


  • Support internal and external inspections and investigations, including Quality and HSE-related activities.


  • Maintain clear and effective communication with appropriate customer groups.


Basic Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering; Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or Chemical Engineering preferred.


  • 5+ years of direct engineering experience with building, utility, tank farm, and logistics-related systems in an FDA-regulated industry.
  • Qualified applicants must be authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. Lilly will not provide support for or sponsor work authorization or visas for this role, including but not limited to F-1 CPT, F-1 OPT, F-1 STEM OPT, J-1, H-1B, TN, O-1, E-3, H-1B1, or L-1.


Additional Preferences:

  • Previous start-up experience for new buildings and pharmaceutical equipment-related systems.


  • Understanding of agile engineering techniques used to manage buildings, utilities, and equipment.


  • Previous experience with equipment installation, commissioning, and qualification.


  • Engineering experience with manufacturing or chemical plant utilities.


  • Engineering-related project management experience.


  • Experience with CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management Systems), UBMS (Utility Building Management System), and QBMS (Quality Building Management System).


  • Strong office software skills, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, UMS, data historian tools, and collaboration sites.


  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.


  • Knowledge of cGMP principles.


  • Demonstrated understanding of engineering concepts, first principles, and engineering functional standards.


  • Strong technical aptitude with the ability to train and mentor others.

Actual compensation will depend on a candidate's education, experience, skills, and geographic location. The anticipated wage for this position is
$66,000 - $171,600

Full-time equivalent employees also will be eligible for a company bonus (depending, in part, on company and individual performance).
