Position SummaryThe Area Director of Engineering is responsible for the overall maintenance, safety, and physical condition of the hotel. This role leads the engineering and maintenance team, ensures compliance with all regulations, manages capital projects, and protects the hotel's assets while supporting an exceptional guest experience.
Key ResponsibilitiesLeadership & Management- Lead, train, and supervise the engineering and maintenance team
- Schedule staffing and manage labor costs within budget
- Foster a culture of safety, accountability, and preventive maintenance
- Coordinate with department heads to support operational needs
Building & Systems Maintenance- Oversee daily maintenance of guest rooms, public areas, back-of-house, and grounds
- Maintain and repair HVAC, electrical, plumbing, boilers, elevators, fire/life safety, and building automation systems
- Implement and manage preventive maintenance programs
- Respond to emergency repairs and on-call situations
Safety & Compliance- Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations
- Maintain fire/life safety systems and emergency preparedness plans
- Manage OSHA, ADA, environmental, and health department requirements
- Conduct regular safety inspections and drills
Financial & Asset Management- Develop and manage the engineering department budget
- Control expenses, utilities, and energy consumption
- Prepare capital expenditure (CapEx) plans and oversee renovation projects
- Manage service contracts, warranties, and vendor relationships
Project & Vendor Management- Oversee renovations, upgrades, and special projects
- Solicit bids and negotiate contracts
- Monitor contractor performance and ensure work quality
- Coordinate inspections and permits
Guest & Brand Standards- Support guest satisfaction by minimizing downtime and service disruptions
- Ensure hotel meets brand standards and quality audits
- Respond to guest maintenance concerns when needed
QualificationsEducation & Experience- 5-10+ years of hotel or commercial building engineering experience
- 3+ years in a supervisory or management role
- High school diploma or equivalent required; technical certifications preferred
- Hilton experience a plus
Technical Skills- Strong knowledge of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and life safety systems
- Experience with CMMS and building management systems
- Understanding of energy management and sustainability practices
Soft Skills- Strong leadership and communication skills
- Excellent problem-solving and organizational abilities
- Ability to prioritize in a fast-paced, 24/7 environment
Physical Requirements- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
- Ability to stand, walk, climb ladders, and work in confined spaces
- Availability for evenings, weekends, and emergencies
