POSITION SUMMARYThe Application Scientist will provide a scientific foundation to Advion Interchim Scientific's ICP-MS product line by developing a deep understanding of customer needs, building applications, and performing sample preparation activities across the following key disciplines:
- Environmental monitoring and analysis (water, soil, geology, etc.)
- Food sciences and toxicology
- Clinical and biomedical applications
The incumbent will generate data for application notes and technical literature and will communicate product operation and sample preparation techniques to customers through demonstrations, training courses, and formal presentations. The incumbent will also contribute to commercial operations for the ICP-MS product line - helping identify new applications and markets, supporting marketing communications, and assisting the sales process.
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES- Develop effective analytical methodology for the analysis of elements via inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) in a variety of matrices.
- Generate new data with Advion Interchim Scientific colleagues and customers in our key application areas, in the form of application notes, peer-reviewed publications, and oral or poster presentations at conferences.
- Engage with customers and markets to define new applications and open new markets.
- Partner with Marketing Communications to develop effective marketing strategies and campaigns.
- Engage with prospective customers to support the sales process.
- Provide onsite and telephone support, troubleshooting customer sample preparation and analysis challenges.
- Deliver onsite customer training and applications assistance as part of Advion Interchim Scientific's post-installation, application-specific training initiative.
- Conduct on- and off-site product demonstrations to potential customers in support of Advion Interchim Scientific's sales and marketing efforts.
- Interact with customers by phone or laboratory visit to establish analysis needs, analyze customer samples, and deliver reports that support the sales process.
- Provide training classes for customers at Advion Interchim Scientific's Ithaca facilities.
- Maintain and manage the ICP-MS application laboratory, including instrument upkeep, consumables, sample handling, and overall lab readiness for demonstrations, training, and customer sample analysis.
- Work closely with the research and engineering group to develop and test new products.
REQUIREMENTS- Education: MS or PhD in analytical chemistry, environmental sciences, food sciences, or toxicology. Other degrees with demonstrated experience will be considered. Post-doctoral training is a plus.
- Core expertise: In-depth knowledge of modern inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and related sample preparation techniques (e.g., microwave digestion), preferably with experience in environmental chemistry, geology, or food science/toxicology.
- Hands-on skills: Demonstrated background in hardware skills and the ability to troubleshoot scientific instruments, along with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Preferred: General knowledge of organic chemistry and atmospheric pressure ionization mass spectrometry (ESI and APCI) is a plus. HPLC experience is also a plus.
- Experience: Three or more years of application development or hands-on laboratory work with ICP-MS is desirable.
