About the Role:

The faculty physician is responsible for the care of patients in the hospital and clinics, as well as research, educational and advocacy initiatives as determined by the Division Chief and/or the Center leadership.

Required Skills/Knowledge
  • Knowledge of current principles, methods and procedures for the delivery of medical evaluation, diagnosis and treatment in the area of expertise
  • Knowledge of legal and ethical standards for the delivery of medical care
  • Ability to function independently in evaluating patient problems and developing a plan for patient care
  • Ability to incorporate ethical concepts into patient care and discuss these with the patient, family, and other members of the health care team.
  • Ability to supervise, advise, educate and train clinical professionals and/or students in area of expertise with respect to their level of training.
  • Ability to maintain quality, safety, and/or infection control standards.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills are necessary.
  • Ability to navigate and use electronic medical record and smart phone technology for placing and responding to calls and texting
  • Physical abilities needed for lifting gas (oxygen, air, nitrous oxide) tanks, moving stretchers, turning and moving patients of all sizes, managing airways, and performing CPR


Required Licenses and Certifications
  • Fully licensed and credentialed attending staff category physician on the medical staff of Children's National Medical Center. Upon Hire
  • Board eligible/certified in anesthesiology and in pediatric anesthesiology with the expectation that the employee will be board certified within 3 years and maintain certification.
  • Chronic pain physicians shall be board certified or eligible in Pain Medicine, or equivalent training in this subspecialty .


Core Clinical Competencies
  • Core competency in Pediatric Anesthesiology includes the knowledge and skills to provide comprehensive management of newborns, infants, children, and adolescents to be rendered unconscious or insensitive to pain and emotional stress during surgical, dental and medical procedures. This includes perioperative examination and evaluation, assessment of the patient's anesthetic risk and impact of any coexisting disease or condition, and developing an appropriate anesthetic management plan pursuant thereto. The anesthesiologist also provides consultation to medical and surgical colleagues as well as parents and families in questions related to anesthesia, sedation and management of pain problems.
  • Perform general anesthesia, and all other levels of sedation using intravascular, intramuscular, trans-mucosal, inhaled and topically applied agents including major and minor tranquilizers, potent inhaled anesthetic vapors, anesthetic gases, narcotics and non-narcotic analgesics and neuromuscular blocking agents and including invasive monitoring, respiratory therapy including short and long term ventilatory support.
  • Perform airway management including mask ventilation, laryngeal mask airway insertion, direct laryngoscopy, fiberoptic bronchoscopy and video laryngoscopy with tracheal intubation.
  • Perform local and regional anesthesia with and without sedation, including topical and infiltration, minor and major nerve blocks, intravenous blocks, spinal, epidural.
  • Perform vascular access including peripheral and central venous cannulation, and arterial cannulation.
  • Perform patient controlled analgesia using morphine, fentanyl & hydromorphone. Provision of postoperative pain relief with epidural infusion of local anesthetics &/or narcotics.
  • Perform advanced life support and resuscitation of patients of all ages.
  • Evaluate and manipulate respiratory parameters; difficult airway problems; fluid, electrolyte, and metabolic parameters including use of blood component therapy; and cardiovascular parameters.
  • Manage hypovolemia from any cause; malignant hyperthermia; unconscious patients; and manipulation of body temperature.
  • Provide collaborative supervision of Allied Health Professionals (Anesthesia Assistants, Anesthesia RNs and Nurse Practitioners) in the Division of Anesthesiology, Pain and Perioperative Medicine.
  • Perform diagnostic and therapeutic management of perioperative and acute pain.

Special Procedures
  • Special Procedures Privileges in Cardiac Anesthesiology: Anesthetic management of infants, children & adults (with congenital heart lesions) undergoing surgery for corrective and palliative repair of the heart and/or great vessels with or without extracorporeal by-pass.
  • Special Procedure Privileges in Chronic Pain Medicine: Management of complex, chronic pain syndromes, acupuncture, interventional pain procedures.

The disclosed salary range includes the minimum and maximum rates within which Children's National believes an individual's base pay rate will fall for this position. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the maximum of the pay range. The exact pay rate for this position will be based on a variety of factors in alignment with the Children's National compensation philosophy. These factors are legitimate and non-discriminatory including, but not limited to, the current market conditions; organizational needs; the individual's combination of prior work experience, level of education, knowledge, skills, and other qualifications. Children's National is committed to providing a fair and competitive total rewards package to each of our employees. This base salary range does not include our comprehensive benefits package or any additional compensation for which this position may be eligible.
