What you'll contribute:
  • Under general supervision, performs a variety of technical and operational duties within the U.W. Montlake Hospital STAT Lab to ensure secure chain-of-custody receipt of specimens directly from operating room staff. Responsible for accurate specimen receipt, accessioning, handling, and preparation in accordance with established protocols.
  • Core responsibilities include specimen intake, real-time coordination with OR staff, accessioning into the laboratory information system (EPIC), and grossing of biopsy specimens following standard procedures. Ensures timely progression of cases to meet turnaround time expectations while maintaining accurate and complete documentation.
  • Maintains operational readiness of the gross room, including inventory management, stocking of supplies, and ordering materials. Performs routine cleaning and maintenance of grossing stations, equipment, and workspaces, ensuring compliance with regulatory and safety standards through documented logs.
  • Supports intraoperative consultation workflows (frozen sections), including assisting Pathologists' Assistants and residents with specimen preparation, cutting, staining, and slide handling as needed.
  • Assists with onboarding and training of new staff, reinforces adherence to protocols, and serves as a resource for troubleshooting workflow or quality concerns. Escalates issues appropriately to leadership.
  • Demonstrates strong communication, attention to detail, and teamwork in a high-acuity environment supporting patient care and diagnostic quality.


Requirements:
  • A Bachelor's Degree with coursework in chemistry, biology and other biological sciences including microscopy AND certification, or certified within two years of date of hire, at the Technologist level by a nationally recognized certifying agency such as the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, the American Society of Clinical Laboratory Science or the Microscopy Society of America AND one year of clinical anatomic laboratory experience.
  • Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and/or registration.


Additional Legal Requirements:
  • At least 60 semester hours, or equivalent, from an accredited institution that, at a minimum, includes either-
  • 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses; or
  • 24 semester hours of science courses that include:
    • 6 semester hours of chemistry;
    • 6 semester hours of biology; and
    • 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination
