Summary

As an Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Mediator at the GS-0301-13, you will be part of the Office of Field Programs, U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, serving in person in one of the agency's District, Field, Area, or Local Offices, depending on the selected duty location. If selected, you will be responsible for conducting neutral ADR mediations involving employment discrimination disputes.

Duties

Help

  • Counsels potential mediation participants and their representatives regarding mediation as an alternative to an administrative EEOC investigation or other formal procedures.
  • Mediates employment disputes alleging violations of the laws the EEOC enforces. Some disputes may contain complex issues and require application of new solutions or innovative techniques.
  • Uses a variety of alternative dispute resolution techniques. Facilitates party interaction and provides parties with resolution options to bring about successful resolution.
  • Exercises resourcefulness and ingenuity to win cooperation of the participants or to develop new approaches or solutions to problems where accepted methods and techniques have been challenged.
  • Establishes a high degree of acceptability to the parties involved, particularly when issues are sensitive or participants are resistant to compromise.
  • Drafts and revises, as necessary, settlement agreements and other case resolution documents and submits factual and timely mediation reports.

Qualifications

For the GS-13: You must have at least one (1) year of specialized work experience comparable to the GS-12 grade level in the federal service directly related to investigating and/or resolving Equal Employment Opportunity-related disputes, such as using effective settlement techniques to facilitate communication between disputants to break impasses and/or to further parties' understanding of different perspectives and interests in order to successfully guide parties toward mutual agreement.

Merit promotion applicants must meet time-in-grade requirement as defined in 5 CFR 300, Subpart F. One year at the GS-12 level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS- 13 level.

Applicants must meet all eligibility requirements (e.g., time-in-grade and qualification requirements) within 30 days of the closing date specified in the vacancy announcement.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
