Job Description:

Position Summary

The HVAC Technical Trainer is responsible for developing, delivering, and continuously improving technical training programs for HVAC service, maintenance, and installation technicians. This role serves as a subject matter expert and mentor, helping technicians improve technical proficiency, diagnostic capabilities, safety compliance, customer service, and overall job performance.

The ideal candidate combines advanced residential HVAC expertise with a passion for coaching others. This individual will assess technician skill levels, create curriculum, facilitate classroom and field-based training, and partner with operational leaders to drive technician development and business results.

What You'll Do
Technical Training & Development
  • Develop and deliver HVAC technical training programs for technicians at all experience levels.
  • Create and maintain training materials, curricula, hands-on labs, assessments, and certification pathways.
  • Conduct classroom, virtual, and field-based training sessions.
  • Provide coaching and mentorship to technicians, leads, and supervisors.
  • Support onboarding and development programs for new technicians.
  • Train technicians on current HVAC systems, tools, technology, and best practices.
Technical Expertise
  • Deliver advanced training on:
    • Gas furnaces
    • Heat pumps
    • Air conditioners
    • Ductless systems
    • Indoor Air Quality (IAQ)
    • Hydronic and boiler systems (where applicable)
    • Electrical troubleshooting
    • Refrigeration diagnostics
    • Combustion analysis
    • Airflow and static pressure analysis
  • Support adoption of emerging technologies, including newer refrigerants and heat pump systems.
Technician Assessments & Quality Improvement
  • Evaluate technician skills through ride-alongs, observations, written tests, and practical assessments.
  • Identify skill gaps and recommend individual development plans.
  • Assist leadership teams in developing technician progression pathways.
  • Monitor training effectiveness and recommend continuous improvements.
  • Partner with operational leaders to reduce callbacks, improve diagnostic accuracy, and increase technician performance.
Safety & Compliance
  • Promote a strong culture of safety throughout the organization.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, OSHA requirements, EPA regulations, and industry standards.
  • Deliver safety training and reinforce safe work practices in both classroom and field environments.
Collaboration
  • Partner with Service Managers, General Managers, Regional Leaders, and field teams to identify training needs.
  • Coordinate manufacturer training opportunities and certification programs.
  • Maintain accurate training records, certifications, and skills assessment documentation.
Required Qualifications
  • 7-10+ years of hands-on residential HVAC experience.
  • Extensive experience with:
    • Gas furnaces
    • Heat pumps
    • Air conditioners
    • Hydronic/boiler systems (where applicable)
    • Ductless systems
    • IAQ products and solutions
    • Electrical troubleshooting
    • Refrigeration diagnostics
    • Combustion analysis
    • Airflow and static pressure testing
  • EPA 608 Universal Certification.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in HVAC diagnostics and troubleshooting.
  • Strong knowledge of electrical systems, refrigeration cycles, airflow performance, and combustion principles.
  • Proven ability to mentor, coach, or train HVAC technicians.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills.
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Strong commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement.
Preferred Qualifications
  • NATE Certification.
  • HVAC manufacturer certifications.
  • 10+ years of HVAC industry experience.
  • Previous HVAC instructor, trainer, or technical education experience.
  • Experience designing and implementing technical training curricula.
  • Experience conducting technician skills assessments and evaluating technician progression.
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 Certification.
  • Experience with ServiceTitan or similar field service management software.
  • Experience supporting residential service, maintenance, replacement, and installation operations.
  • Experience training technicians on heat pump technology and newer refrigerant platforms.
  • Experience developing structured technical career path programs.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb, and work in training lab and field environments.
  • Ability to travel to operating locations for training, coaching, and technician assessments.
  • Ability to operate tools, testing equipment, and technology commonly used within the HVAC industry.

A valid driver's license with at least 3 years of US driving experience, is required for this role
