Full Job Description
Description

Do you love developing creative solutions to challenging aero and thermal structural problems?

Are you looking for a unique opportunity to impact advances in the country's groundbreaking coordinated air and missile defense systems?

If so, we're looking for someone like you to join our team at APL!

We are seeking an aerostructural engineer to help us evaluate, develop, and test sophisticated target and interceptor flight systems. You will be joining a hardworking team of engineers and scientists who enjoy solving complicated problems in a supportive, goal-oriented environment where you'll contribute to a wide variety of aerospace programs. We are passionate about stress analysis, flight hardware design, and test. Our team dedicates itself to solving a broad spectrum of formidable engineering problems especially in the areas of composites materials, and complex thermal-structural interactions. Our team values curiosity, creativity, and straightforward solutions to tough problems.

As an aerostructural engineer, you will...
  • Use your engineering knowledge to develop analytical and computational structural models of aerospace systems
  • Analyze systems at varying levels of fidelity, using a range of tools, to evaluate and guide decisions during all phases of the design cycle for missile and related systems
  • Support or conduct physical testing to validate models and verify system performance under representative flight and environmental loads
  • Engage with and contribute to multi-disciplinary teams with the goal of solving engineering problems critical to the nation's defense
  • Help guide programs to successful outcomes with clear communication to APL partners and sponsors

Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...
  • Possess a BS in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a closely related technical area
  • Have at least seven years of progressive, hands-on experience in advanced finite element and first principles analyses. At least two of those years should be as a structural analysis lead on cross-functional teams.
  • Possess deep expertise in linear and non-linear, static and dynamic structural analyses including stress, modal/vibration, and buckling analysis
  • Demonstrate outstanding ability to translate complex engineering concepts and results into clear, actionable recommendations and risk assessments
  • Possess a solid understanding of one or more related fields. These include but are not limited to computational fluid dynamics (CFD), aerodynamics, fluid-structure interactions (FSI), aerothermal and thermal analysis, materials science, or environment and load definition, etc.
  • Are able to obtain an Interim Secret security clearance by your start date and can ultimately obtain a Secret level clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.
