BSD PED - Emergency Medicine

Job Summary
Nocturnal role providing direct comprehensive health care to pediatric patients in the Comer Children's Hospital Pediatric Emergency Department. Works collaboratively within the Emergency Department care team using advanced clinical skills to assess and manage lower acuity patients in a Pediatric Fast Track treatment setting.

Responsibilities

  • Perform the clinical assessment, evaluation, tests, treatments, therapies, medical management and other direct care for patients in the Pediatric Emergency Department.
  • Assume accountability for direct patient care, which includes obtaining medical history, performing physical assessments, ordering and interpreting appropriate diagnostic tests, writing discharge orders, and prescribing appropriate medications as set forth in delegation of prescriptive authority. Patient care may also include screening patients to determine the need for hospital admission and assume responsibility for developing therapeutic relationships with patients.
  • Collaborate with and act as liaison among the nurse, patient, family, physician, and community resources for coordination of patient care.
  • Actively pursues required knowledge and skills for professional development. Identify and participate in quality assurance issues on the unit. Act as a resource for clinical skills to staff on or off the unit.
  • May participate in teaching students and residents in techniques and procedures which are unique to specific clinical setting.
  • Practices specific and invasive procedure privileges are detailed in each APPs Delineation of Privileges.
  • Designs patient education programs that include information required to make informed health care and treatment decisions.
  • Develops diagnostic strategies and therapeutic interventions needed to achieve the goals and outcomes of the patient's plan of care.
  • Performs other related work as needed.


Minimum Qualifications

Education:
Minimum requirements include a college or university degree from an accredited school/college.

Work Experience:
Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through a combination of education and a minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience in a related job discipline.

Certifications:
Current and/or eligible for State of Illinois licensure/registration required. Eligibility to be privileged and credentialed through the Medical Staff Office (MSO). - State of Illinois

Preferred Qualifications

Education:
  • An advanced degree from an accredited school/college of nursing or completion of an accredited Physician Assistant educational program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant, Inc.
  • Master's of Science in Nursing.


Experience:
  • Background working in a Pediatric Level 1 Trauma ER.


Licenses and Certifications for Advanced Practice Provider:
  • Current and/or eligibility for State of Illinois RN and APN licensure/registration.
  • Must be certified as a Nurse Practitioner by the American Nurse's Credentialing Center or American Academy of Nurse Practitioners.
  • Once licensed, apply for a mid-level practitioner controlled substance license and DEA number.
  • Emergency Department experience as a Nurse Practitioner.


Licenses and Certifications for Physician Assistant:
  • Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant educational program.
  • Certification in ACLS and by the National Commission on the Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) and current and/or eligibility for State of Illinois licensure/registration.
  • Emergency Department experience.

  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate communication among various levels of practitioners.

Working Conditions
  • Serve as an independent provider in our Pediatric Level I Trauma accredited Emergency Room at The University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital.
