A total of one (1), 1.0 FTE, Advanced Practice Professional (either NP or PA) will be hired to fill this job opening.

Job Summary

The Neurosurgery department is a team of attending physicians, residents, and advanced practice providers (APPs) that provide care to patients with multiple neurological disorders. The team cares for patients with a wide variety of conditions including Brain and Cranial Tumors, Vascular Neurologic Disorders, Functional Neurologic disorders, Scoliosis, and Neck and Spine Pain. APPs on this team function independently in a large neurosurgical group, providing surgical consultations, pre-operative and post-operative care.

Responsibilities*

Duties will include but are not limited to:
  • Provide health care to predominately neurosurgical patients with cranial disorders/brain tumors
  • Multi-disciplinary clinic involvement weekly with coordination with oncology and radiation oncology
  • In addition, other diagnosis may include spine disorders, scoliosis, vascular, cranial disorders, functional neurologic disorders, and brachial plexus/peripheral nerve patients.
  • Diagnoses and treatment of neurosurgical patients as well as providing preoperative and postoperative care independently and through collaborative relationships.
  • Complete New patient Evaluations independently
  • Perform detailed history and physical examinations
  • Comprehensive assessment of neurological conditions
  • Collaborate and present patient findings to the attending neurosurgeons to formulate a treatment plan
  • Order and interpret appropriate radiographic studies and perform office procedures.
  • Collect and assist in the interpretation of reports from diagnostic and laboratory tests; radiographic procedures and clinical studies; administer follow-up to patients and assist in the referral to various internal and external facilities.
  • Evaluate postoperative patients and perform routine follow-up visits.
  • Provide urgent same-day office visits.

Organizational Relationships and Practice Environment:
  • Advanced Practice Professionals (APPs) will receive medical supervision from the Neurosurgical Service Chief or designee.
  • Advanced Practice Professionals (APPs) will receive administrative supervision from the APP Manager.

Required Qualifications*

NP
  • Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner specialty certification in the State of Michigan.
  • Current specialty certification to practice as an Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner, Family Nurse Practitioner, Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner, or Acute Nurse Practitioner
  • Minimum 2 years of experience as an outpatient or inpatient advanced practice provider in a neurosurgical practice
  • APP experience functioning independently
  • Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.
  • Certification as a Nurse Practitioner recognized by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN).
  • Current DEA registration required
  • BLS


PA:
  • Current license to practice as a Physician Assistant in the State of Michigan.
  • Certification by the National Commission on Certification for Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
  • Satisfactory completion of a physician assistant program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA), or one of its predecessor agencies, CAHEA or CAAHEP.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience as an outpatient or inpatient advanced practice provider in a neurosurgical practice
  • APP experience functioning independently
  • State of Michigan Controlled Substance License Required
  • Current DEA registration required
  • BLS

Desired Qualifications*
  • 2 or more years of APP experience caring for patients with cranial disorders, brain tumor, and/or oncology experience
  • Outpatient APP experience caring for multiple neurosurgical disorders (spine disorders, scoliosis, neurovascular conditions, brachial plexus)
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate clinical care ideas across multiple patient care services and to communicate as a patient advocate.
  • Ability to prioritize assignments and manage a busy work environment

Work Schedule

Hours: 40 per week
Shift/Hours/Days: 8 hour shifts, Monday-Friday, potential for occasional weekend coverage
