Full Job Description
PURPOSE OF THE JOB

The Glass Scientist is responsible for supporting safe, stable, and cost-effective manufacturing operations by applying glass science expertise to glass-making materials, formulations, and process improvement. This role partners closely with Operations, melting, controls, sourcing, vendors, and product teams to solve technical problems, qualify new glass-making materials, strengthen supply and quality performance and ensure environmental and product health compliance.

Reports to: Program Leader- Glass Science Operations

Span of Control: Individual Contributor

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Productivity & Stable Operations (90%)
  • Collaborate with Operations, melting and controls R&D groups to solve problems and improve process performance as part of a collective team
  • Work with Owens Corning production facilities, sourcing organizations, and vendors to reduce raw material cost and improve raw material quality and supply security
  • Create glass formulations for the production facilities utilizing the glass-making materials available
  • Develop solutions that improve production efficiency and reduce production cost
  • Lead specification and qualification process on new glass-making materials
  • Environmental and product health compliance


Glass Science (10%)
  • Collaborate with product teams & peers in Glass + Melting S&T to improve product quality


JOB REQUIREMENTS

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree in Glass Science, Ceramic Science, Materials Science, or Geology
  • 1-2 years of experience in glass R&D, Operations, or process optimization


PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
  • 3+ years of experience in glass R&D, Operations, or process optimization is strongly preferred
  • Advanced degree in the fields of study listed under Minimum Qualifications
  • Experience creating visuals in PowerBI to analyze large data sets


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
  • Strong fundamental knowledge of batch material and glass reactions
  • Knowledge of batch raw material processing and material handling
  • Communicates effectively (oral and written) to technicians, scientists, plants and leadership
  • Demonstrates strong attention to detail by ensuring accuracy in glass formulations, data analysis, documentation, specifications, and technical recommendations
  • Active listening skills: listens carefully to understand concerns, asks clarifying questions, and responds thoughtfully to stakeholders across technical and operational teams
  • Demonstrates a customer-first approach by aligning technical work with stakeholder needs and operational priorities
  • Able to collaborate and work effectively across multiple organizations and technical disciplines
  • Self-starter who works with minimal supervision, effectively balancing multiple assignments
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to use and analyze data from multiple sources to make data-driven decisions
  • Documents trials and trains others on process and product improvements
  • Demonstrates strong project leadership skills Including:
    • Self-sufficient and capable of delivering solutions with minimal supervision
    • Capable of leading and functioning in a multi-disciplinary team
    • Concisely communicates technical progress during project reviews with senior leaders
    • Strong understanding of basic financial concepts to deliver solutions with the greatest value
