Job Duties

To provide quality instructions and to meet the individual needs of the students in the areas of Adult Basic Education (ABE) and General Educational Diploma (GED). Additionally, to meet the standards defined under the Commonwealth's statutes and program certification requirements.

Minimum Qualifications

Demonstrated ability to facilitate other instructors. The ability to engage students in one-on-one teaching of all the five subjects and supervise students and aides in a classroom setting; the ability to maintain accurate records; the ability to facilitate other instructors. Knowledge and experience of policy and procedure governing adult education. Must possess working knowledge of all facets of the basic adult education field, adult literacy and computer software appropriate for program needs. Demonstrate competency in the relevant field of current licensure.

Bachelor's degree from accredited college or university in Adult Education/Special Education or in a relevant educational field, preferably a major or minor in high school math, science or other relevant subject.
Experience teaching adults and or youth and knowledge and experience of policy and procedure governing adult education is required.
Licensure: Must possess a Collegiate Professional or Postgraduate Professional Teaching License from the Virginia Department of Education or qualify for reciprocity from another state and without deficiencies.

If you are seeking reciprocity from another state, you must submit all documentation for a Virginia Teaching License within 90 days of employment and satisfy all requirements within a year.

Master's degree with a major or minor in a relevant educational field. Prefer experience teaching adults and or youth in a correctional or alternative education setting. Prefer knowledge and experience of policy and procedures governing adult education. Experience of VA-Department of Corrections' institutional policies and procedures. Knowledge of correctional education classroom management. The ability to supervise students and inmate aides in the correctional facility; knowledge of the Department of Corrections (DOC) institutional policies and procedures. Prefer knowledge of policy and procedures governing adult education.
