About the position

A Corporate Counsel provides legal services as a practicing lawyer, interpreting laws, rules and regulations, and advising University personnel on legal rights, obligations and privileges. This may include practice in one or more of the following areas: labor and employment legal matters.

What you'll do
• Provide strategic, pragmatic counsel to Human Resources and management throughout the employee lifecycle, including hiring, leaves and accommodations, wage and hour compliance, corrective action, and termination, delivering clear, actionable guidance and risk-based recommendations.
• Draft, review, and maintain employment-related documents and templates, including policies, employee communications, corrective action documents, severance and restrictive covenant agreements, and offer letters.
• Develop and deliver training on employment laws, corporate policies, and the Company's Code of Ethics for Human Resources, managers, and employees.
• Partner with the Ethics, Compliance, and Data Privacy team to manage employee complaints and internal investigations and to ensure fair, consistent, and legally compliant processes and documentation.
• Monitor legal and regulatory developments and emerging employment law trends and proactively collaborate with Human Resources and management to develop compliance strategies and mitigate organizational risk.
• Support Senior Employment Counsel on complex or high-risk matters, including escalations, sensitive employee relations issues, and strategic initiatives.

What you bring to the table

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND RELATED WORK EXPERIENCE:
• Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
• Minimum of two (2) years of experience practicing law at a law firm, corporation, or governmental agency.
• Demonstrated knowledge of federal employment laws, including the FLSA, ADA, ADEA, FMLA, and Title VII, as well as state employment laws (Arizona, California, Colorado, Illinois, New York, Oregon, and/or Washington experience preferred).
• Active member in good standing of at least one U.S. state bar or the District of Columbia.

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:
• Ability to translate complex legal issues into clear, practical, business-oriented advice for non-legal audiences.
• Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate organizational policies, procedures, and legal requirements to stakeholders at all levels.
• Strong collaboration and relationship-building skills, with the ability to work effectively across Human Resources, Compliance, Privacy, and business teams.
• Demonstrated proficiency with workplace technology and legal research tools, including the ability to effectively leverage emerging technologies and artificial intelligence (AI) tools to enhance productivity, analysis, and service delivery.
• Ability to manage a substantial workload independently in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment while exercising sound judgment and prioritization skills.
• Ability to maintain a professional presence and effectively represent the organization in interactions with legal, educational, business, and governmental stakeholders.

Pay Range

The annual pay range for this position is $102,000 (minimum), $154,100 (midpoint), and $206,200 (maximum).*

*Typical hiring range is between the minimum and midpoint of the above pay range. Actual starting base pay may vary based on factors such as education, experience, skills, location and budget. Compensation above the midpoint is generally associated with experienced, long-tenured employees who have demonstrated sustained performance and expertise in the role.
