As the Active Transportation Advisor, you will help shape how people move safely and comfortably throughout Strathcona County, with a focus on active transportation, traffic safety, and sustainable mobility.

In this highly collaborative role, you will lead the development and implementation of transportation plans, policies, programs, and infrastructure initiatives that support a safe, connected, and accessible transportation network for people of all ages and abilities. Working closely with internal departments, community organizations, residents, consultants, government agencies, and Council, you will help shape transportation priorities that enhance mobility, improve accessibility, and foster vibrant, inclusive communities. Whether you're developing active transportation strategies, planning and evaluating infrastructure improvements, exploring emerging mobility solutions, securing project funding, or leading meaningful public and stakeholder engagement, you will have a direct impact on creating a more sustainable, connected, and livable Strathcona County where walking, cycling, and rolling are safe and attractive transportation choices.

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead the development and implementation of Active Transportation / Vulnerable Road User Strategy based on the actions identified by the Active Transportation and Traffic Safety Task Force and aligned with County priorities
• Develop, update, and manage plans, policies, and bylaws in collaboration with internal and external partners
• Assist with budget planning and tracking as needed, ensuring alignment with program objectives
• Identify, pursue, and administer grant funding from provincial, federal, and private sources to support active transportation initiatives
• Monitor best practices and research to inform planning and policy updates
• Ensure active transportation initiatives align with County traffic safety policies and approved plans
• Provide technical expertise and respond to public inquiries regarding active transportation planning, mobility programs, and traffic safety initiatives
• Lead transportation-related consultation and public engagement projects, including procurement and oversight of external consultants
• Support the planning, implementation, and evaluation of transportation infrastructure projects and mobility programs
• Review designs, reports, and infrastructure plans for safety, accessibility, and policy compliance; conduct site visits and inspections
• Maintain data, monitor performance, and evaluate program effectiveness to support continuous improvement and strategic planning
• Build and maintain strong relationships with community groups, government agencies, and key stakeholders, collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders, including internal teams, community groups, and government agencies
• Lead public education and engagement efforts to increase awareness and encourage safe active transportation behaviours
• Champion innovative approaches that support transportation network planning, multimodal mobility, and community connectivity

Qualifications and Skills:

• Post-secondary degree in Transportation Planning, Urban Planning, Engineering, Public Policy, Community Planning, or a related field with five (5) years of relevant experience; or a diploma in a related field with seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience. Relevant experience may include municipal transportation planning, mobility planning, traffic safety, infrastructure planning, or policy development
• A degree in Planning, Transportation Engineering, Public Policy, or a related discipline with a focus on mobility, transportation systems, or sustainability is considered an asset
• Demonstrated experience in transportation planning, transportation policy development, mobility planning, transportation infrastructure projects, traffic safety initiatives, or multimodal transportation systems
• Knowledge of transportation planning principles, complete streets design, active transportation networks, mobility strategies, and transportation safety program
• Familiarity with Vision Zero, Safe Systems, or similar traffic safety frameworks
• Experience working within municipal government, consulting, transportation engineering, or related sectors is considered an asset
• Excellent communication, facilitation, and stakeholder engagement skills, with experience presenting to diverse audiences and leading collaborative discussions
• Ability to build consensus, manage competing interests, and foster strong working relationships across a broad range of stakeholders

Conditions of Employment:

• Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver's licence and submission of a 5-year Driver's Abstract with less than 7 demerits

Equivalencies of education and experience may be considered.
