As the Active Directory and Messaging Administrator in the Information Systems Department (ISD), you will ensure the reliability, security, availability, and performance of the County's Microsoft infrastructure while implementing secure, scalable solutions that support business operations, cybersecurity initiatives, and future growth. Additional responsibilities include:
  • Designing and supporting enterprise Microsoft Active Directory, Entra ID, Exchange Online, Exchange Server, and related identity and messaging services
  • Developing, testing, documenting, and maintaining backup, recovery, and disaster recovery solutions for Active Directory, Microsoft 365, Exchange, and other enterprise Microsoft platforms
  • Planning and implementing system upgrades, migrations, and enhancements to improve performance, scalability, security, and reliability
  • Implementing and supporting enterprise identity and authentication solutions, including LDAP, SAML/OIDC single sign-on (SSO), DNS, SMTP, and cloud-based identity services
  • Configuring and maintaining Active Directory forests, domains, organizational units (OUs), Group Policy Objects (GPOs), Intune policies, tenant configuration, trusts, and site architecture
  • Partnering with Information Security, Governance, Risk, and Compliance teams to strengthen security, mitigate vulnerabilities, and implement enterprise security standards using technologies such as Microsoft Purview, Proofpoint, Valimail, and related security tools
  • Automating administration and maintenance tasks through PowerShell and other scripting tools to improve efficiency, consistency, and security
  • Administering the enterprise Microsoft 365 messaging and collaboration environment, including Exchange Online, Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive, mailbox management, auditing, compliance, litigation hold, retention policies, and security controls
  • Monitoring the health, performance, and security of on-premises and cloud-based Microsoft environments while proactively identifying and resolving issues before they impact users
  • Troubleshooting complex enterprise infrastructure issues, documenting system configurations, and providing advanced technical support for Microsoft identity and messaging platforms

The ideal candidate is an experienced Microsoft infrastructure professional with a strong background administering enterprise identity, messaging, and collaboration platforms in a complex enterprise environment. In this role, you will bring your collaborative problem-solving skills and commitment to maintaining secure, reliable, and high-performing systems. You will also possess many of the following:
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Active Directory and Entra ID administration and architecture
  • Experience administering Microsoft 365 technologies, including Exchange Online, SharePoint, OneDrive, Teams, and Microsoft Purview (Data Loss Prevention, Security Labels, eDiscovery, and compliance features)
  • Strong PowerShell scripting and automation experience
  • Knowledge of enterprise identity, authentication, and messaging technologies, including LDAP, SAML, OIDC, DNS, SMTP, and email security
  • Working knowledge of networking, virtualization, cloud infrastructure, storage, and cybersecurity best practices
  • Experience implementing enterprise technology projects and following change management and IT governance practices
  • Excellent analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate across technical and business teams

This position is also required to have access to the Sheriff's Office or Probation Department facilities. This requires a more extensive "Security Clearance" that will be performed after hire. Successful completion of the probationary period may be contingent upon passing the security clearance, which may include completion and review of a Personal History Statement packet, Live Scan fingerprint-based criminal history checks, warrant checks, written reference checks, etc. If you are offered a position that requires a security clearance, the job offer letter will clearly specify this as a condition of the probationary period.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Any combination of education and training which would provide the opportunity to acquire the knowledge and abilities listed. Normally, graduation from a four year college or university with major coursework in computer science, information systems, or a closely related field would provide this opportunity.

Experience: Any combination of training and experience which would provide an opportunity to acquire the knowledge and abilities listed. Normally, three years of technical professional experience involving systems analysis, programming, systems engineering, or similar field in a multi-platform information systems environment including experience installing and maintaining systems software and working with database structures. Additional, highly relevant professional level experience may be substituted for the required education.

License: Possession of a valid driver's license at the appropriate level including special endorsements, as required by the State of California, may be required depending upon assignment to perform the essential job functions of the position.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
