Job Title: Accounting Manager
Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled Accounting Manager to lead a team of 3-4 Property Accounting Staff. In this role, you will oversee annual and monthly accounting activities, ensuring compliance with GAAP and client policies. You will also be involved in planning, training, and developing the technical and analytical skills of your team. This position offers a hybrid work schedule, a stable work environment, and the opportunity to work with Canada's premier property management group.
Responsibilities
  • Directly supervise and manage a team of 3-4 Property Accounting Staff.
  • Oversee annual activities such as property budgets, cash flow forecasting, final operating cost recovery adjustments, annual property taxes, and property audits.
  • Complete monthly activities including month ends, cash flows, and monthly reporting.
  • Review monthly and annual property accounting activities to ensure compliance with GAAP and client policies.
  • Liaise with property site staff, leasing staff, management, and clients.
  • Plan timing and completion of annual and monthly activities including budgets, audits, and reporting.
  • Manage staff workloads and provide training and development.
  • Support and assist the Controller in the overall management of the accounting team.
  • Provide input on staffing requirements and manage special projects.
  • Set up new properties and handle property sales/turnover, including financial reconciliations and closing duties.
  • Contribute input and feedback for improving procedures and enhancing quality and efficiency.
Essential Skills
  • Accounting expertise with experience in retail and property budgets.
  • Proficiency in cash flow forecasting, property tax, and recoveries.
  • 3+ years of management experience within public practice.
  • Experience managing at least two direct reports, with skills in training, coaching, and performance management.
  • Strong written and spoken communication skills.
  • Advanced Excel proficiency and knowledge of GAAP.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • 5+ years of commercial property accounting experience, ideally in retail.
  • Experience with recoveries, lease reviews, recovery modeling, HST reconciliations, and revenue reconciliation.
  • Extensive commercial retail experience, preferably in shopping centers.
  • Familiarity with Yardi Software.
  • CPA designation.
  • Experience auditing Property Management Firms from public practice is a plus.
  • Growth mindset and ability to remain calm under pressure.
Work Environment
The role is within the commercial retail property group, and the average tenure of management is 15 years. The incumbent will manage 4 property accountants. The position is office-based Monday to Friday, with a 37.5-hour workweek, and follows a business casual dress code. Employees benefit from a hybrid work schedule, with the option to work from home two days per week.
