General Description
The Accounting Manager is responsible for managing core accounting operations and supporting accurate and timely financial reporting. The role partners closely with the Controller and works across the business on accounting matters related to manufacturing, inventory, trade spend, and other operational areas.
The position requires experience in CPG, preferably within food or beverage manufacturing, and a strong understanding of accounting in a manufacturing environment. This is a hands-on role that involves working closely with plant operations and cross-functional teams.
Essential Duties and Key Responsibilities
Own day-to-day CPG accounting
- Manage hands-on daily and monthly accounting and reconciliations, including month-end closure
- Assist in preparing accurate monthly and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP
- Ensure timely and accurate filing of tax returns and regulatory reports
- Support the Controller in financial close, budgeting, forecasting, and ad-hoc analysis
Manufacturing, inventory & margin focus
- Lead all inventory accounting, including standard costing, variance analysis, and reconciliations between physical and financial inventory
- Partner with operations and manufacturing to ensure accurate costing, yield, and waste reporting
- Analyze gross margin by channel, product line, and customers
- Prepare monthly inventory and Cost of Goods Sold (COGS) reporting and analysis
Build scalable processes
- Monitor and improve accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls
- Support ERP and system enhancements as the business grows in complexity and volume
Lead and develop the team
- Assist the Controller to supervise, train, and mentor accounting staff
- Create cross-training and process documentation to ensure continuity and reliability
- Foster a collaborative, solutions-oriented accounting function
Qualifications and Experience
- Experience in CPG, food & beverage, or manufacturing accounting
- Strong understanding of inventory, cost accounting, and gross margins
- Hands-on experience managing month-end close in a growing environment
- Strong communication skills
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (or equivalent experience)
- High integrity, reliability, and attention to detail
- Advanced Excel skills
- Experience with QuickBooks or similar accounting systems
- Manufacturing ERP experience
Physical Requirements and Work Environment
- The work environment can vary from office settings to warehouses, potentially exposing employees to noise, temperature changes, and other environmental factors.
- Involves extended periods of sitting, standing, and walking, with potential for occasional lifting, bending, and stooping, along with the ability to use hands and fingers for computer work.
- May be required to travel between Oakland and the San Leandro Plant.
- Lift objects up to 25lbs.
