MCS is seeking an Accounting Manager to join the support team. This role provides hands-on accounting support to 18 (and growing) unique business units. The position is responsible for preparing accurate journal entries, completing account reconciliations, supporting the monthly close, and maintaining the integrity of financial records in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), company policies, and internal controls.
The Accounting Manager works closely with business unit controllers and accounting personnel to complete recurring accounting activities, resolve reconciling items, and meet reporting deadlines. This is a tactical, execution-focused role that supports the segment through accurate transaction processing, close support, documentation, and timely follow-up on outstanding items.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities- Demonstrate a proactive, hands-on approach, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and accountability.
- Proactively identify opportunities to incorporate AI into accounting processes while maintaining appropriate accuracy, confidentiality, and controls.
- Learn and effectively use ChatGPT and other approved AI tools to improve productivity, analysis, communication, and workflow efficiency.
- Communicate promptly and proactively with leadership and business partners regarding financial matters, project status, risks, and issues requiring attention.
- Prepare and post recurring and non-recurring journal entries, including appropriate supporting documentation and approval evidence.
- Prepare supporting schedules and account analyses for financial reporting, management review, audits, and technical accounting requests.
- Prepare technical accounting memos for management review by applying US GAAP, researching authoritative guidance and analyzing assigned accounting matters and transactions.
- Complete assigned monthly, quarterly, and annual close activities.
- Review general ledger activity for accuracy, completeness, proper account classification, and compliance with company accounting policies.
- Assist with intercompany accounting and eliminations.
- Research and resolve accounting differences by working directly with business unit controllers and other finance personnel.
- Assist with the preparation and review of financial statements and management reports by validating underlying data and identifying unusual activity.
- Support internal and external audit requests by gathering documentation, responding to routine questions, and tracking open items through completion.
- Follow established GAAP, SOX, company policy, and close procedures, and promptly communicate control or process exceptions.
- Contribute to a collaborative and responsive team environment.
QualificationsEducation- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance required.
- CPA preferred
Experience- 3+ years of progressive accounting experience, including hands-on experience preparing journal entries and account reconciliations.
- Prior experience supporting a month-end close or accounting team preferred; formal people-management experience is not required.
- Manufacturing experience preferred.
- Experience with general ledger accounting, account analysis, financial reporting support, and internal controls.
- ERP experience (Great Plains, Epicor, SAP, Oracle, or similar) preferred.
Skills- Technical and working knowledge of GAAP
- Hands-on experience supporting month-end, quarter-end, or year-end close activities.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to investigate transactions and reconciling items.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel proficiency.
- Experience with ERP systems and financial reporting consolidation software.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to document accounting conclusions and follow up on open items.
- Ability to work independently, manage recurring deadlines, and collaborate effectively with business unit accounting personnel.
- Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to prioritize multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
