Job Summary

The Accountant II or Accountant III coordinates and maintains Platte River's transactional accounting functions, including capital accounting, fuel accounting, billing, accounts receivable, and cash management. The position performs accounting, budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, compliance, and audit-related responsibilities; analyzes and manages complex financial data; and supports departments across the organization in achieving financial and operational objectives.

Platte River is seeking to fill one position at either the Accountant II or Accountant III level, depending on the selected candidate's qualifications and experience.

Work environment and schedule

This position works a typical workweek schedule in a general office environment and may be eligible for hybrid workdays. The successful candidate should reside within a commutable distance of the Fort Collins area.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Models the mission, vision, values, and culture of the organization.
  • Serves as a resource in transactional accounting and related budgeting areas.
  • Supports implementation of accounting initiatives, standards, policies, procedures, and Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) pronouncements.
  • Prepares annual budget components, projections, forecasts, and reporting documents.
  • Prepares quarterly and annual compliance requirements, including sales tax and insurance reporting.
  • Prepares and maintains accounting schedules, account reconciliations, subledger activity, and general journal entries.
  • Performs month-end close processes for subledgers and the general ledger.
  • Performs annual accounting responsibilities, including pension accounting and asset count activities.
  • Prepares variance analyses, forecasts, projections, and financial and operational reports.
  • Collaborates with departments and project managers to review, analyze, and manage complex financial data.
  • Supports budget, forecasting, and reporting education efforts across the organization.
  • Prepares financial information and reporting for management and other stakeholders.
  • Collaborates with the Financial Systems Manager, consultants, and other stakeholders to maintain and improve financial application systems.
  • Serves as a resource for financial application systems.
  • Researches and prepares complex, confidential, and time-sensitive reports.
  • Prepares and maintains department procedures, accounting forms, guidance documents, and organizational resources.
  • Assists with annual audit activities and prepares supporting schedules.
  • Performs data review, analysis, and validation.
  • Participates in special projects and organizational initiatives.

  • Prepares accounting deliverables and reporting under minimal supervision.
  • Prepares capital budget, forecasting, fuel accounting, depreciation, and reporting schedules.

Accountant III
  • Independently prepares and develops accounting deliverables, reporting processes, analyses, and forecasts.
  • Develops capital budget, forecasting, fuel accounting, depreciation, and reporting schedules and related assumptions.
  • Identifies opportunities for process improvements and increased operational effectiveness.


Other Functions

  • Responds to internal and external questions and requests.
  • Advises others on accounting matters.
  • Maintains statistical and historical data and reports.

Accountant II
  • Intermediate Microsoft Excel skills, including pivot tables, lookups, charts, and spreadsheet development.
  • Intermediate financial systems skills (Oracle preferred).
  • Working knowledge of governmental accounting and Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) accounting preferred.

Accountant III
  • Intermediate-to-advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including complex analysis and reporting functions.
  • Intermediate-to-advanced financial systems skills (Oracle preferred).
  • Proficient knowledge of GAAP.
  • Proficient knowledge of governmental accounting and FERC accounting preferred.
  • Ability to identify, recommend, and implement process improvements.


Qualifications

Required Education and Licenses
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in accounting, finance, business, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Current valid driver's license and ability to remain insurable under the vehicle liability policy.


Required Work Experience

Accountant II
  • Two or more years of accounting, financial analysis, and reporting experience.

Accountant III
  • Four or more years of accounting, financial analysis, and reporting experience.
  • Demonstrated experience independently preparing analyses, forecasts, budgets, and accounting deliverables.


Preferred Education, Licenses, and Work Experience
  • Experience in public utility and capital accounting.
  • Experience with budgeting, forecasting, or financial reporting.
  • Experience implementing accounting initiatives, standards, or process improvements.


Physical demands

Minimal physical effort typically found in clerical work. Primarily sedentary, may occasionally lift and carry light objects. Minimal walking or standing as needed.

Hazards

Minimal exposure to hazards are typically found in general office environment where there is rarely to no exposure to injury or accident.

Pay

This position is salaried exempt; pay ranges listed below are annualized. Factors used to determine starting pay may include experience, education, certifications, skills, and internal equity.

The position level (Accountant II or Accountant III) will be determined based on the selected candidate's qualifications and experience.

Accountant II:

Full range: $81,073 to $109,481

Hiring range: $81,073 to $95,277

Accountant III:

Full range: $99,538 to $139,419

Hiring range: $99,538 to $119,533
