Account Manager - Building Automation & Mechanical
Athena Engineering Inc. • San Dimas, CA • Full-time • Onsite + field
Athena Engineering is hiring an Account Manager to go out and bring work in the door - on both the mechanical side and the building automation/controls side. If you can walk a mechanical room, talk shop with an engineer, and still love the hunt of closing a deal, keep reading.
We'll be honest about why this seat has been hard to fill: most candidates are either all-engineer and don't love selling, or all-sales and can't hold a technical conversation. We're looking for the rarer person in the middle - technical enough to be credible, sales-driven enough to grow a book of business.
What you'll do
- Own a book of accounts and a sales number, and bring profitable work to both our mechanical and controls departments - not just one.
- Build real relationships with owners, developers, general contractors, mechanical engineers, architects, and end-users.
- Walk jobs and scope HVAC and building automation opportunities (DDC controls, lighting, access, and camera systems) credibly.
- Partner with our estimating team on take-offs and proposals, and hand off clean, well-qualified opportunities.
- Prospect for new work, run jobwalks and lunch-and-learns, and represent Athena at industry events.
- Keep an honest pipeline and forecast in our CRM.
What we're looking for
- 2+ years of technical sales experience in HVAC, building automation/controls, or mechanical construction.
- Enough technical fluency to talk credibly with engineers and contractors and scope Division 23 (mechanical) and Division 25 (integrated automation) work. You don't have to design the DDC sequence - but you have to understand it.
- A people-first operator who's comfortable on the PHONE (not just email), handles pressure and conflict without drama, and hustles.
- Ability to read construction blueprints, specifications, and electrical schematics.
- Valid California driver's license and a clean, insurable driving record - this role qualifies for our company vehicle program under Athena's Fleet Safety Policy.
- Honest, straightforward, organized. A sense of humor helps.
Nice to have
- Experience selling to mechanical contractors, general contractors, or engineers in Southern California.
- LEED GA/AP, or manufacturer / building-automation controls certifications.
- A four-year degree - though we care more about what you can do than where you learned it.
Compensation & benefits
- Base salary: $80,000-$95,000, depending on experience.
- Uncapped commission on the profitable work you win - no cap, and the more profitable the work, the more you earn. We'll walk through realistic earning potential in the interview.
- Company vehicle program participation (upon qualifying under our Fleet Safety Policy).
- Full benefits: medical, dental, and vision insurance; life and AD&D; FSA and HSA; 401(k); wellness stipend; paid vacation, holidays, and sick time; a paid birthday holiday; education reimbursement; and more.
How to apply
Apply right here through our BambooHR careers page. In your application, tell us about a deal you're proud of - bonus points if it involved both mechanical and controls scope.
