PURPOSE:

CareFirst Administrators (CFA) is seeking a strategic, relationship-driven Account Consultant III to serve as the primary client advisor for a portfolio of complex self-funded and third-party administration (TPA) clients. This role is responsible for client retention, growth, renewal strategy, and overall customer experience. The Account Consultant III partners with employers, brokers, consultants, and internal stakeholders to develop innovative solutions, deliver operational excellence, and drive long-term client success. The ideal candidate brings strong self-funded healthcare expertise, executive presence, and a consultative approach to building trusted relationships and solving complex business challenges.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Serve as the strategic relationship leader for a portfolio of complex self-funded and TPA clients, with accountability for retention, customer satisfaction, and profitable growth.
  • Develop and execute client-specific renewal, retention, benefit, and financial strategies aligned with each clients business objectives.
  • Build trusted relationships with employers, brokers, consultants, and key internal partners while serving as the primary point of contact for strategic account needs.
  • Lead stewardship meetings, renewal presentations, and executive business reviews, translating data and market insights into actionable recommendations.
  • Consult clients on self-funded plan strategy, funding arrangements, clinical and pharmacy programs, stop-loss solutions, and cost-containment opportunities.
  • Partner across Sales, Underwriting, Operations, Claims, Customer Service, Clinical, and vendor teams to deliver an exceptional client experience.
  • Own complex service and operational issues through resolution, ensuring accountability, proactive communication, and sustainable outcomes.
    Identify opportunities to strengthen client relationships, expand products and services, and enhance long-term value.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Bachelors Degree in Business, Finance, Healthcare Administration, or a related field OR in lieu of a Bachelors Degree, an additional four years of relevant work experience is required in addition to the required experience.

Licenses/Certifications:
  • Current Health and Life License for Maryland, Washington, DC, and Virginia is required.

Experience:
8+ years of experience in healthcare, employee benefits, account management, client management, consulting, or sales. Demonstrated success managing complex client relationships and driving retention and growth. Experience working with self-funded employers, brokers, consultants, and executive decision-makers.

Preferred Experience:
  • Strong understanding of self-funded/ASO plans, TPA operations, stop-loss strategies, and healthcare funding arrangements.
  • Experience with a health plan, TPA, employee benefits consulting firm, or another Blue Cross Blue Shield Plan.
  • Experience leading renewal strategy, executive business reviews, and complex issue resolution.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs)

  • Ability to build credibility and influence with senior leaders, brokers, consultants, and clients.
  • Strong knowledge of self-funded healthcare, TPA operations, funding arrangements, and market trends.

  • Strong problem-solving and issue-resolution capabilities.

  • Proficiency with CRM platforms, Microsoft 365 applications, and client management tools.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:
Estimated Travel: 4060%.

This role includes regular travel to meet with clients, brokers, consultants, and prospective clients; support renewal and stewardship activities; participate in business development opportunities; and strengthen strategic relationships throughout the assigned territory.

Salary Range: $89,600 - $145,600 plus Sales Commission

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The associate is primarily seated while performing the duties of the position. Occasional walking or standing is required. The hands are regularly used to write, type, key and handle or feel small controls and objects. The associate must frequently talk and hear. Weights up to 25 pounds are occasionally lifted.
