Zurich Canada is currently looking for a Senior or Specialist Underwriter on our Accident & Health team in Toronto. This role will leverage deep underwriting expertise and market insights to expand our business through new and existing broker and customer relationships.
Reporting to the Canada Head of Accident & Health, you will analyze and underwrite new and renewal business, collaborate with internal teams to deliver tailored solutions, and lead initiatives focused on risk selection, pricing, deal structuring, and strategic growth. You'll work closely with the underwriting team while supporting client engagement and driving market expansion.

What you will do- Underwrite and analyze highly complex new and renewal business independently within delegated authority levels.
- Analyze existing client portfolios, claims data, and product performance to identify growth opportunities while balancing risk appetite and underwriting guidelines.
- Participate in sales team meetings and represent Zurich at industry events as needed.
- Conduct market and competitor research to understand industry trends and emerging risks, informing our go-to-market strategy.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with brokers, agents, and customers to drive business retention and acquisition.
- Document broker/client visits and account status in required systems within established time frames.
- Participate in underwriting and analyzing new and renewal business independently within delegated authority levels.
- Contribute to a collaborative and supportive team environment.
- Analyze existing client portfolios, claims data, and product performance to identify growth opportunities and enhance customer value.
- Collaborate closely with underwriting, claims, and product teams to deliver tailored, innovative solutions and outstanding client service.
- Support claims teams with coverage expertise and issue resolution.
- Business travel and extended hours during peak periods, as required.
- Maintain a valid driver's license.
Job Qualifications - What you bring to the tableRequired:- High School Diploma or Equivalent and 5 or more years of experience in the Underwriting or Market Facing area.
OR
- High School Diploma or Equivalent and 10 or more years of experience in the Claims or Underwriting Support area
OR
- Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice including an Associate Degree and 3 or more years of experience in the Underwriting or Market Facing area
OR
- Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice including an Associate Degree and 8 or more years of experience in the Claims or Unde rwriting Support area
AND
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office
- Experience working on time restraints for quotes on new and renewal business
- Experience working in a team environment
- Ability to develop and maintain strong business relationships.
- Demonstrated negotiation, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
Preferred:- Bachelors Degree
- Knowledge of Group Benefits (A&H, Life, health) insurance products, underwriting philosophy, and regional regulations.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Microsoft Office experience
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively. At Zurich Canada, we are committed to pay equity. We determine compensation based on objective criteria such as skills, experience, and internal equity. The salary range for this position is $100,000- $150,000. This range reflects the expected pay for the role across Canada and may vary depending on factors like office location, specific responsibilities, and individual qualifications. As required by local law, Zurich provides in good faith a reasonable compensation range, but starting salaries may exceed this range based on a candidate's skills and experience.
