What You'll DoThe City and County of Denver is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Systems Administrator to join our Technology Services team at Denver911. The successful candidate will report to the 911 IT Manager and be responsible for managing and maintaining our critical systems and infrastructure, with a focus on vCenter, CAD (computer aided dispatch), SQL, and MDT (Mobile Data Terminal). In addition to these responsibilities, the Senior Systems Administrator will also serve as the first point of escalation during standard business hours for system issues.
While this position will not be part of the existing team's on-call rotation, the individual hired may be engaged to respond to incidents during off hours if the urgency requires it.
Responsibilities- Plans and coordinates the setup, installation, and configuration of mission-critical 911 systems, including operating systems, hardware, software, Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD), call-handling platforms, and related public safety applications. Deploys new software releases, patches, and system upgrades to ensure uninterrupted emergency service delivery, as well as supporting the 911 TS Team in the delivery of its work.
- Monitors, tunes, diagnoses, and resolves complex system, application, and database issues in a high-availability 24/7 emergency communications environment. Continuously monitors network and system performance to ensure reliability, redundancy, and scalability to meet current and future public safety demands.
- Troubleshoots, maintains, and repairs complex system failures involving servers, telephony systems, operating systems, security tools, applications, database structures, and data protection systems that support 911 operations and emergency response.
- Implements, maintains, and documents backup and disaster recovery processes to ensure continuity of operations for emergency communications systems. Leads capacity planning efforts to support peak volumes, disaster scenarios, and system resilience requirements.
- Plans, coordinates, and implements security measures in compliance with Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) and other public safety regulations, as well as the City and County of Denver's Information Security Team, to protect sensitive data, systems, and infrastructure supporting emergency services.
- Develops, tests, and implements complex automation scripts to streamline system operations and enhance system reliability in a mission-critical environment.
- Consults with 911 center staff, dispatchers, and public safety personnel to identify system issues and operational needs, then evaluates and recommends hardware and software solutions to support efficient emergency response workflows.
- Analyzes system and equipment performance records to determine maintenance, repair, or replacement needs. Recommends enhancements to improve system availability, redundancy, and performance in support of emergency communications.
- Develops, maintains, and distributes complex custom reports related to system performance, uptime, and operational efficiency for public safety stakeholders.
- Collaborates with users and leadership to identify new operational and technological requirements, recommending solutions that enhance 911 service delivery and interoperability with police, fire, EMS, and other public safety partners.
- By position, performs lead work over subordinate employees or project management duties, particularly for critical system implementations, upgrades, and incident response coordination.
- Performs other related duties as assigned, including participation in on-call issue escalations and emergency response support.
- Employees may be re-deployed during major incidents or declared emergencies to support continuity of operations within their agency or across City agencies, ensuring uninterrupted delivery of critical public safety services.

- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field, or a combination of education and work experience
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in systems administration, with a focus on vCenter, UCS, CAD, SQL, and MDTs
- Strong knowledge of virtualization and cloud technologies
- Experience with disaster recovery and business continuity planning
- A desire for ongoing education and technical knowledge growth
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to perform under pressure and handle multiple tasks concurrently

Minimum Qualifications- Education requirement: Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Business Administration, Mathematics or a related field.
- Experience Requirement: Three (3) years of professional Information Technology experience installing, maintaining, and/or modifying application software, operating system and/or network operating system software and associated hardware.
- Education/Experience Equivalency: One (1) year of the appropriate type and level of experience may be substituted for each required year of post-high school education.
- Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirements.
- License/Certifications: Requires a valid Driver's License at the time of application.
- Must obtain Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) clearance within the probationary period.
- Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment.
