OPENING DATE: 9/24/2026 CLOSING DATE: 10/1/2026 JOB SUMMARY To act as a lead field crew or drafting worker; and to perform a full range of paraprofessional drafting, office and field engineering and survey work including preparing or reviewing plans and construction projects for compliance and obtaining a variety of required field data or design data for various projects.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS This is the advanced journey level class in the engineering technician series. Incumbents of this class provide lead supervision to lower-level paraprofessional engineering staff in addition to performing the full range of field and office engineering work requiring previous specialized experience. Duties are performed under minimal supervision and guidance.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED Receives general supervision from the Assistant Engineering Services Supervisor or Engineering Services Supervisor.
May exercise functional and technical supervision over lower-level technical staff.
EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES - Essential and other important duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Act as survey crew leader over a small surveying crew while in the field.
Review engineering plans to determine appropriate method of layout of construction projects.
Review and process various permits including petroleum pipeline permits for local oil companies and utility company permits.
Act as instrument operator involved in a variety of survey work; operate a variety of engineering equipment including transits, level, probing and survey rods, metal locator and other related equipment used in the collection, analysis and modification of engineering plans.
Determine angles and set grade stakes, hubs, turning points and benchmarks using appropriate surveying techniques.
Participate in a variety of activities involving travel within city limits including site inspections and field data collection.
Locate and measure boundary lines, rights-of-way, and land grades; establish rights-of-way and baselines as required; locate property lines and determine utility pipe sizes.
Determine and verify mathematical calculations related to surveying, drafting and basic engineering.
Participate in a variety of engineering design and planning work related to municipal engineering projects.
Perform a variety of drafting duties including drawing and preparing plans, processing blueprints and researching easements.
Maintain and update a variety of drafting files and records; maintain accurate survey records in the form of field notes and sketches; prepare reports as necessary.
Other Important Responsibilities and Duties: Supervise and train assigned employees.
Inspect construction projects for compliance with city regulations, approved construction plans and permit conditions including petroleum pipelines.
Answer questions and provide information to the public concerning engineering activities.
Locate underground utilities and determine elevations.
Develop and plot cross sections and profiles.
May set and read tide gauges.
Maintain assigned equipment and vehicles.
Perform related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of: Surveying techniques and practices.
Terminology, methods, practices and techniques of drafting.
Geometry and trigonometry as applied to the computation of angles, areas, distances and traverses.
Engineering maps and records.
Advanced mathematical computations.
Modern office methods and practices.
Ability to: Calculate complex engineering and field survey computations.
Perform complex engineering drafting work.
Review, interpret and apply field notes in performance of drafting and survey duties.
Operate a variety of engineering equipment including transits, levels, probing and
survey rods, metal locators and other related equipment used in the collection, analysis and modification of engineering plans.
Use and care of drafting equipment and tools, and surveying, and mechanical instruments and tools.
Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for:

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES - Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience: Two years of increasingly responsible experience performing a variety paraprofessional engineering work related to the area of assignment.
Training: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by specialized training in mathematics, surveying, civil engineering or a related field.
License or Certificate: Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate Texas driver's license.
