The United States Forest Service (USFS) is an agency of the U.S. Department of Agriculture that manages public lands in national forests and grasslands. The USFS was established in 1905 and is responsible for managing 154 national forests and 20 grasslands in 43 states and Puerto Rico. The agency's mission is to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of the nation's forests and grasslands to meet the needs of present and future generations. The USFS employs approximately 30,000 people and has an annual budget of around $5 billion.
