The National Association of State Public Interest Research Groups (PIRGs) is a federation of state-based, nonprofit, nonpartisan organizations that advocate for the public interest. The organization was founded in 1971 by Ralph Nader and provides research, advocacy, and grassroots organizing on a variety of issues, including consumer protection, environmental protection, and government reform. The PIRGs are funded by individual donations and foundation grants, and do not accept corporate or government funding. The organization has a presence on college campuses across the country, and has been instrumental in passing a number of important consumer protection laws at the state and federal level.
