Levi Strauss & Co., a popular American brand most known for Levi’s denim jeans, announced on Tuesday that it laid off 700 corporate employees due to poor performance in its second quarter, which was linked to coronavirus-related shutdowns of its retail stores, according to CNBC. The organization’s second-quarter revenue totaled $498 million, down 62% from the $1.31 billion it pulled in during the same period of last year. They layoffs cut 15% of the company’s corporate staff worldwide.

“The second-quarter results highlight the difficult external environment we’ve been navigating the last several months,” said Chip Bergh, Levi Strauss president and chief executive officer, in an email to employees. “Although our online sales accelerated, it was not nearly enough to offset the revenue impact of closed doors,” Bergh said.
