Job Title: Welding Engineer

Job Summary:

The position will support the Welded Products Manager by providing engineering leadership, design authority, technical review, product development, and project management for the Custom Welded Products business unit.

This position requires professional engineering competency, disciplined documentation, strong technical ownership, and the ability to work within ZOOK procedures, quality systems, customer requirements, and applicable standards. The role will contribute to design development, engineering change control, risk assessment, product qualification, supplier/customer technical communication, and mentorship of technical staff.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Partner with the Welded Products Manager to mentor, prioritize, coordinate and execute engineering activities required to meet project deliverables, production targets, and business unit growth objectives.
  • Lead or facilitate hands-on product development initiatives for custom welded assemblies, burst plugs, and related pressure relief products from concept through design release, validation, production readiness, and documentation completion.
  • Use SolidWorks and other engineering tools to create, review, and maintain CAD models, assemblies, drawings, and other technical documentation as required.
  • Develop, review, and maintain quality and process documentation such as PFDs, D/PFMEAs, Control Plans, Travellers, test plans, work instructions, lab reports, and other APQP or customer-required documentation.
  • Drive welding process development and implementation activities related to GTAW, LBW, product qualification, WPS/PQR/WPQ review, certification scope expansion, and applicable industry standards, or customer-specific requirements.
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives involving process standardization, workflow improvement, product qualification, documentation consistency, and lab capability.
  • Escalate quality, safety, customer impact, schedule risk, supplier capability concerns, unclear requirements, and workload risks with objective evidence, recommended next steps, and appropriate urgency.
  • Provide additional engineering support to ZOOK's teams and customers as required.


Qualifications:

  • Licensed Professional Engineer, P.Eng, in good standing with Professional Engineers Ontario.
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or closely related engineering discipline.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and apply engineering drawings, customer specifications, manufacturing requirements, inspection records, test results, and applicable technical standards.
  • Strong working knowledge of CAD and ASME Y14.5-2018; proficiency with SolidWorks is required and AutoCAD experience is considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of pressure relief products, rupture disks, pressure boundary design, custom welded assemblies, machining, inspection, and manufacturing is strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of welding processes such as GTAW and LBW, and familiarity with ASME Section IX, PED / ISO 15614-1, ISO 17927, or AWS D17.1 is considered an asset.
  • Familiarity with APQP, test plans, engineering change control, and controlled release processes is strongly preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft 365 applications; experience with Microsoft NAV or ERP systems is considered an asset.
  • Ability to demonstrate mentorship and leadership skills, communication, engineering problem-solving, risk assessment, root cause analysis, and sound technical judgment.
  • Supervisory, team-lead, project-lead, or people-development experience is strongly preferred.
  • Minimum 3 to 5 years of experience in an industrial, manufacturing, product development, pressure equipment, or welding environment is preferred.
  • Minimum 2 years experience required in an industrial / manufacturing environment including development / implementation of welding processes and procedures.
