The role - what you'll do

Barr is seeking a water resources engineer to join our Bismarck team. In this hybrid role, you will support the Water Resources group, working on projects with a diverse team of engineers and scientists and completing water resources, civil engineering, and related technical assignments. Assignments may include hydrologic and hydraulic modeling, GIS, and CADD work.

A successful person in this role will have strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills. They must possess a flexible working style and be willing to occasionally modify their schedule to meet deadlines and/or client needs.

Your impact - key responsibilities
  • Hydraulic and hydrologic analysis: hydrologic analysis related to stormwater planning and flood control, hydraulic analysis and design related to storm sewer infrastructure, rivers, streams, conveyances, dams, and other hydraulic structures.
  • Reporting: assist with the preparation of technical reports, plans, and specifications, and work with clients, permitting agencies, and public officials.
  • Project and task management: assist with planning, coordinating, and executing projects. Help ensure project milestones are met and provide regular updates to project managers and clients.


About the opportunity
  • Hybrid: a hybrid work arrangement may be considered for this position. A hybrid work arrangement refers to splitting time worked between a Barr office and a home office. This position is based out of Barr's Bismarck, North Dakota, office.

About you - required core competencies
  • Education: bachelor's degree in civil/environmental engineering with emphasis on water resources.
  • Experience: 5+ years of water resources engineering experience with a focus on hydrology, hydraulics, or water quality.
    • Experience leading tasks or projects.
    • Experience and knowledge of hydrologic modeling and 1D and 2D hydraulic modeling software.
  • Driver's license: possession of a current, valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship by Barr, now or in the future.


Helpful additional experience (not required)
  • Master's degree or PhD in civil or environmental engineering with a focus on hydrology and/or hydraulics.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or ability to obtain within one year.
  • Experience in business development and client management.
  • Experience with water quality modeling and analysis.
  • Working knowledge of GIS and CADD software.
  • Experience with site development design, plans, and/or specifications.
  • Construction observation, fieldwork, and surveying experience.


Compensation: anticipated range of $80,000-$100,000. Compensation will vary based on relevant experience, education, skill level, and other compensable factors. Employees in this position may also be eligible for a discretionary cash bonus based on team and individual performance. This position is classified as exempt (salaried) under the Fair Labor Standards Act.
