Full Job Description
RSI is recruiting for a Waste Management Engineer Specialist to provide technical support for waste management and disposition activities primarily, radiological and chemical tracking and waste compliance and corporate reporting. Position requires a basic understanding of radiochemistry, environmental and regulatory compliance, and information technology skills including experience with coding or structured query language (SQL).

This position is in Oak Ridge, TN.

Job Summary:
  • Supports the technical review of waste data packages and documentation for compliance with the TSDRF WAC, Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), radiological and other statutes/regulations and U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Orders.
  • Provides waste processing support to research and reconcile waste chemical, physical, and radiological variations from acceptable knowledge.
  • Prepares, reviews, and/or approves waste management calculations.
  • Maintains the waste tracking database systems and provide helpdesk support areas including but not limited to: updating reference tables in the applications; creating and running various operational and regulatory reports; tracking empty containers, generating barcodes, uploading radiological data into the applications, support the development and maintenance of waste shipment schedules; entering waste tracking closure information, and supports the archiving of life-cycle waste management quality records.
  • Maintain the Waste Generation Forecast and provide reports to support DOE OREM waste tracking information requests.
  • Prepares requirement documents, develops and coordinates application changes for the waste tracking systems to support organization per Information Technology (IT) Software Quality Assurance (SQA) procedures.
  • Monitors compliance with the staging and/or storage time limits promulgated by DOE Order 436.1, RCRA, TSCA and other applicable requirements.
  • Prior to off-site shipment, reviews the waste characterization data and profiles to ensure the waste is appropriately characterized, supports the waste determination, and complies with the applicable WAC.
  • Conducts surveillance, management assessments, and compliance inspections, as assigned.
  • Supports regulatory agency and DOE-OREM interactions, such as negotiations, inspections, and technical assistance meetings

Requirements and Education:
  • Education: Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Science , Engineering or related science/engineering discipline, or demonstrated equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience: BS +4 years of relevant experience required

Preferred Requirements and Education:
  • Technical knowledge of radiological and chemical characterization practices.
  • Technical knowledge of laboratory analytical procedures/practices and analytical data evaluations.
  • Technical knowledge of Treatment Storage Disposal Recycling Facility Waste Acceptance Criterion.
  • Technical knowledge of computer software applications
  • Good knowledge of environmental regulations and DOE Orders.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
