Descriptions & requirements Position overview: The Vice President, Tax will play a key role in driving tax efficiency, ensuring compliance, mitigating risk and building scalable processes and infrastructure to support continued company expansion. This role requires a hands-on leader with deep technical expertise, strong business acumen, and the ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced, high-growth environment. This role reports to the Chief Financial Officer, leads the enterprise tax function and is based at the company's headquarters in Cincinnati, OH.
Responsibilities: - Build the tax framework required to support international expansion
- Establish foundational policies for cross-border transactions, intercompany activity and transfer pricing
- Manage non-U.S. and cross-border tax obligations as international operations develop, including value-added tax (VAT/IVA), permanent establishment risk and transfer pricing documentation
- Identify and proactively manage tax risks associated with entering new markets and providing new services
- Lead all corporate tax functions including federal, state, local and international tax compliance, reporting, planning, and strategy
- Oversee indirect and transaction-based tax compliance, including sales and use tax, gross receipts taxes (e.g., the Ohio Commercial Activity Tax), business licenses and registrations, property tax and unclaimed property/escheatment
- Develop and execute tax strategies that optimize the company's effective tax rate and overall tax position, including owner-level and pass-through entity (PTE) tax outcomes, while ensuring compliance with all applicable laws and regulations
- Manage tax matters arising from the company's pass-through (partnership) structure, including partnership and owner Schedule K-1 reporting, state pass-through entity (PTE) tax elections and composite and nonresident owner withholding filings
- Identify and capture available tax credits and incentives, including research and development (R&D) credits and state and local economic development incentives tied to facility and headcount growth
- Monitor and interpret changes in tax legislation and assess potential impacts to the organization, including multi-state nexus and economic nexus thresholds as the company adds locations and services
- Lead and manage all tax audits, inquiries and relationships with external tax advisors and regulatory authorities
- Partner with external auditors and the accounting team to support the financial statement audit and the monthly and quarterly close, including tax-related disclosures, book-to-tax differences and reserves
- Partner with executive leadership on strategic initiatives including acquisitions, entity structuring, expansion efforts and operational planning
- Build and maintain strong internal controls, tax policies and governance procedures across the enterprise
- Drive continuous improvement, automation, standardization and scalability within tax processes, systems and reporting capabilities
- Collaborate cross-functionally with Accounting, Finance, Legal, HR, Treasury and Operations to support enterprise-wide initiatives
- Provide strategic guidance and leadership on complex tax matters including nexus, indirect tax, transfer pricing and multi-entity structures, both international and domestic
- Build, mentor and develop a high-performing tax organization focused on accountability, development and operational excellence
- Support executive leadership with tax forecasting, cash planning and risk management initiatives
Qualifications: - Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance or related field required
- CPA required; master's in taxation or JD preferred
- Big 4 or large public accounting firm foundation strongly preferred
- 15+ years of progressive tax leadership experience with significant corporate tax management responsibility
- Deep expertise in federal, state and multi-state and international corporate taxation
- Strong knowledge of ASC 740, partnership and pass-through entity taxation, GAAP tax accounting and corporate tax compliance requirements
- Demonstrated experience with partnership and pass-through (LLC/partnership) taxation, including Schedule K-1 reporting, state PTE elections and owner-level tax considerations
- Hands-on experience with indirect and transaction-based taxes (sales and use, gross receipts) in a high-volume, multi-state environment
- Proven ability to lead complex tax functions within large, high-growth organizations
- Experience building, scaling or transforming a tax function from a lean base - not solely operating a mature, fully-staffed department
- Experience managing tax planning strategies, audits and regulatory relationships
- Strong analytical, organizational and problem-solving skills
- Exceptional leadership and communication skills with the ability to influence executive stakeholders
- Experience driving process improvement, automation and scalable operational infrastructure
- Advanced ERP, tax software and financial systems experience required
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment with evolving business priorities
- Experience in transportation, logistics, brokerage or high-volume transactional industries preferred
- Experience with multi-entity and multi-state operational structures
