Job Description

The Role

Are you passionate about building the digital backbone that enables world-class vehicle mass engineering? The GMNA Vehicle Mass Integration team is seeking a highly motivated Technical Specialist to serve as the Global Owner for Mass Systems and Tools - the expert who designs, develops, and sustains the engineering infrastructure that the Technical Integration Engineer (TIE) and Vehicle Performance Owner (VPO) rely on every day.

This role sits at the intersection of mass engineering, data systems, and emerging technology. You will be the go-to expert for the full portfolio of mass engineering tools - from critical enterprise systems like NGVMC and GPDS, to advanced modeling tools like THERA and the Mass Book Tool - while actively exploring how AI and automation can elevate the speed and accuracy of mass-related deliverables across the enterprise.

You will work directly in support of the Mass TIE (Technical Integration Engineer) and Mass VPO (Vehicle Performance Owner), enabling their processes with reliable, efficient, and innovative digital solutions.

Impact & Growth

As the Technical Specialist for Vehicle Mass Systems & Tools, you will have enterprise-wide influence - levering your own mass knowledge and the mass team's most critical technical leaders (TIE and VPO) to directly develop the systems and tools they need to succeed. You will be at the leading edge of how GM integrates AI and automation into vehicle engineering, shaping what the future of mass engineering looks like at scale.

This role offers pathways toward Technical Fellow opportunities, broader GPEC systems leadership, or cross-functional IT/engineering integration roles.

What You'll Do (Responsibilities):

Systems Ownership & Development
  • Serve as the Global Process and Systems Owner for the full mass engineering toolchain, including NGVMC, GPDS, THERA, the Mass Book Tool, and supporting macros and data pipelines.
  • Lead the creation, enhancement, and maintenance of digital tools and systems that support mass engineers globally throughout the GVDP (Global Vehicle Development Process).
  • Define requirements, develop solutions, and partner with IT to deliver system improvements aligned with evolving mass engineering needs.
  • Ensure data integrity, system reliability, and user accessibility across all mass-related platforms.

Support of TIE and VPO Processes
  • Partner directly with the Mass TIE (Technical Integration Engineer - AVD) and Mass VPO (Vehicle Performance Owner - Execution) and leverage own deep understanding of the mass role (from AVD to execution) to resolve process pain points and develop enabling tool solutions.
  • Innovate, design, execute and validate tools that support
    • Advanced Vehicle Development (AVD) mass target setting, regression modeling, and early-phase architecture decision-making.
    • Execution-phase mass tracking, Model & Option Weight (MOW) management, certification mass workflows, and compliance reporting.
  • Ensure the tools ecosystem seamlessly connects AVD and execution phases, enabling continuity of mass data and process from early program through production.
  • Provide analytical support to the TIE and VPO for data-driven decision making.

AI and Innovation
  • Actively explore and evaluate emerging technologies - including artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data analytics - to elevate the efficiency and accuracy of mass-related deliverables.
  • Lead proof-of-concept efforts for AI integration into mass workflows (regression model automation, and intelligent data validation, etc.) to improve efficiencies with accuracies.
  • Identify and implement automation opportunities that reduce manual burden on mass engineers.

Training, Process Documentation & Global Cross-functional Engagement
  • Create and maintain global training documents and process guides that support mass engineers in effectively using all mass systems and tools.
  • Serve as the escalation point for systems and tools questions from mass engineers globally.
  • Partner with global mass teams to understand regional needs and ensure tools are globally applicable and accessible.
  • Drive continuous improvement of the tools ecosystem through structured feedback loops, user testing, and DFSS-based process improvement.
  • Interface with IT partners, VDS/GPDS business owners, TACER, Emissions Certification, and Order Fulfillment to ensure mass systems are aligned with enterprise platform changes and roadmaps.
  • Actively monitor IT roadmaps (e.g., GPDS to NGVMC migration, cloud transitions) to proactively position mass tools for upcoming platform shifts.
  • Represent the mass tools portfolio in cross-functional forums and IT collaboration sessions.
  • Serve as a mentor/coach to more junior members of the team in tool development and maintenance to ensure a cohesive and robust approach

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications):
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
  • 10+ years experience in a related engineering field
  • 5+ years experience in modeling, developing and validating vehicle mass.
  • Proficiency in Visual Basic (VBA), SQL, Python, or other programming/scripting languages applied to engineering workflows.
  • Experience with AI, machine learning, or data analytics tools and their application to engineering processes.
  • Proficient with Product Program Content (PPC), Vehicle Description Summary (VDS), and Model & Option Weight (MOW) processes.
  • Experience with regression modeling for vehicle-level mass estimation.
  • High-level analytical ability with demonstrated experience solving complex, unusual, and ambiguous technical problems.
  • Experience in developing, maintaining, and improving engineering tools, macros, and data systems.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills with the ability to translate complex technical topics for diverse audiences.
  • Proven ability to work independently with a high degree of initiative, wide focus, and strategic judgment aligned with business needs/vision.
  • Comfortable dealing with and analyzing large quantities of data across multiple systems.

What Can Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications):
  • Master's degree in Engineering or Computer Science.
  • Strong interpersonal and coaching skills with experience mentoring junior engineers on Mass systems and process topics.
  • Strong proficiency with NGVMC, GPDS, THERA, and/or the Mass Book Tool.
