Position Overview

Lilly recently announced a $4.5 billion investment to create the Lilly Medicine Foundry, a new center for advanced manufacturing and drug development. The first-ever facility of its kind, combining research and manufacturing in a single location, the Medicine Foundry will allow Lilly to further develop innovative solutions to optimize manufacturing processes and increase capacity for clinical trial medicines, while also reducing costs and environmental impact.

The Utilities Process Technician is a subject matter expert on utility systems equipment and processes, serving as a key technical resource, technical training/mentor and operational backbone for the utilities team at the Medicine Foundry site. With deep knowledge across all utility systems - including high purity water, compressed air, steam, chilled water, heated water, chilled glycol, heated glycol, domestic water, cooling towers, tepid water, waste streams, VOC management, nitrogen systems, aqueous waste neutralization, and tank farm management (solvent tank filling and hazardous waste tank emptying) - this position is responsible for coordinating and performing maintenance activities, managing chemical inventories, supporting engineering, running small projects, and driving alarm reduction and SOP accuracy.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Coordinate and/or perform maintenance activities and equipment shutdowns, ensuring proper lockout/tagout is completed, required safety permits in place and equipment is safely made available for maintenance in a timely manner.
  • Monitor and manage chemical inventories across all utility systems, initiating reorders to prevent supply shortfalls and ensure adequate stock is maintained for day-to-day operations.
  • Complete all required Quality documentation including deviations, change controls, and corrective actions, ensuring records are accurate, timely, and compliant with GMP requirements.
  • Lead alarm monitoring and reduction efforts, identifying nuisance and chronic alarms and working with engineering and automation teams to drive alarm rationalization and system improvement.
  • Support engineering on capital projects, equipment commissioning, process troubleshooting, and continuous improvement initiatives, providing operational expertise and technical input.
  • Redline and update SOPs to ensure procedures are accurate and reflective of current system operation; identify and communicate equipment availability status, highlighting any out-of-service or degraded equipment to the appropriate teams.
  • Perform maintenance tasks on utility systems equipment, including swapping filters, cleaning tubes, and connecting/disconnecting hoses, to support routine upkeep and system reliability.
  • Manage maintenance activities associated with work orders, coordinating with operations to confirm equipment availability, ensuring proper lockout/tagout (LOTO) is applied, Safety Permit compliance and returning equipment to service once work is complete.


BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in utilities, industrial, or mechanical operations required.
  • Must have mechanical aptitude/maintenance experience.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.
  • Must be willing to respond to call-in and scheduled overtime work.
  • Must be capable of lifting up to 40 pounds.
  • Must be able to withstand exposure to temperature variations while performing work outside in winter and summer weather conditions.
  • Must be able to wear respiratory equipment.

ADDITIONAL SKILLS/ PREFERENCES:
  • Proven experience acting as a technical lead or in a Shift/Project Lead capacity within an industrial or pharmaceutical utilities environment.
  • Technical/Skilled Trades or vocational degree in mechanical, industrial, or utilities systems preferred.
  • Leadership or supervisory training a plus.
  • Proficient in DCS platforms such as DeltaV, UMS alarm management, CMMS, GMARS, and quality management systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate and perform maintenance activities, manage equipment shutdowns, and communicate effectively across operations, maintenance, and engineering teams.
  • Strong knowledge of GMP, OSHA, EPA, RCRA, and site EH&S regulatory requirements with hands-on experience completing deviations, change controls, and compliance documentation.
  • Previous experience supporting capital projects, alarm rationalization, SOP redlining, and process improvement initiatives in partnership with engineering teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage chemical inventories, track reorder needs, and ensure adequate supply levels are maintained across utility systems.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
  • Permanent Location: Lebanon, IN - Lilly Medicine Foundry.
  • Temporary Location: Carmel or Indianapolis, IN.
  • Hazardous operations exist within Utilities, involving exposure to systems using acid, steam, caustic, high pressure, and high temperatures. Personal protective equipment is required. Awkward positions, cramped quarters, ladder, and scaffolding work will be required at times.
  • Travel: Minimal - less than 10%
  • This position operates on a fixed Monday through Friday dayshift. Occasional coverage of other operations shifts, or supervisory responsibilities may be required based on operational needs.

Actual compensation will depend on a candidate's education, experience, skills, and geographic location. The anticipated wage for this position is
$33.89 - $49.71

Full-time equivalent employees also will be eligible for a company bonus (depending, in part, on company and individual performance).
