Job Summary
The Utilities Manager is responsible for the safe, reliable, environmentally compliant, and cost-effective operation and maintenance of all plant utility systems. This position provides leadership and oversight for all utilities critical to manufacturing operations. The Utilities Manager partners closely with Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, EHS, and contractors to ensure continuous utility availability while driving reliability improvements, energy efficiency initiatives, and regulatory compliance.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
-Manage daily operation of all site utility systems.
-Lead, coach, train and develop utility operators and technical personnel.
-Foster employee engagement, accountability, and continuous improvement.
-Manage staffing, scheduling, training, and performance management.
-Ensure uninterrupted utility supply to manufacturing processes.
-Monitor utility performance and identify opportunities for increased reliability and efficiency.
-Develop contingency and emergency response plans for utility failures.
-Establish and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) including uptime, energy consumption, reliability, and operating costs.
-Promote and enforce a strong safety culture throughout all utility operations.
-Ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, DHEC, environmental permits, and company EHS standards.
-Lead incident investigations involving utility systems and implement corrective actions.
-Develop and maintain utility-related safety procedures, permits, and lockout/tagout requirements.
-Partner with Maintenance and Reliability teams to develop preventive and predictive maintenance strategies.
-Prioritize utility-related maintenance activities and shutdown planning.
-Review equipment failures, conduct root cause analyses, and implement sustainable solutions.
-Develop and implement energy conservation initiatives.
-Monitor utility consumption and identify cost-saving opportunities.
-Support sustainability and carbon reduction initiatives.
-Lead reliability and operational excellence initiatives.
-Utilize Lean Manufacturing and continuous improvement principles.
-Drive process optimization and utility system modernization efforts.
Qualifications (Education Qualifications)
-Bachelor's degree in chemical engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
Experience
-7+ years of manufacturing, chemical plant, or industrial utility experience.
-3+ years of leadership or supervisory experience
-Experience managing utility systems in a continuous manufacturing environment.
-Experience with boiler operations, steam systems, compressed air, cooling water, electrical distribution, and industrial HVAC systems
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
-Strong understanding of industrial utility systems and infrastructure.
-Knowledge of OSHA Process Safety Management (PSM) requirements.
-Understanding of EPA and environmental compliance requirements.
-Strong troubleshooting and root cause analysis skills.
-Excellent leadership, communication, and employee development skills.
-Proficiency with CMMS systems, Microsoft Office, and utility monitoring systems.
Must have the ability to
-Work in a chemical manufacturing environment.
-Climb stairs, ladders, and access elevated work areas.
-Wear required PPE and work around industrial equipment and occasionally lift to 25 pounds.
-Respond to plant emergencies outside normal business hours as needed.
-Manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced manufacturing environment
Work Environment / Physical Demands:
Work is performed in an office environment and requires the ability to operate standard office equipment and keyboards. Light to moderate lifting may be required for packages and other items, ability to walk short distances, may be regularly required to stand, sit, talk, hear, reach, stoop, kneel, and use hands and fingers to operate a computer, telephone, and keyboard.
