Responsibilities*
  • Leadership & Team Management: Provide strategic and operational leadership to a multidisciplinary team. Foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, and accountability. Mentor staff and support professional development.
  • Unix and Linux Server Environments: Direct the planning, deployment, design, and lifecycle management of AIX and Linux server environments on-premises and in the cloud for small, medium, and large-scale clinical, research, and business initiatives.
  • OpenShift Container Infrastructure: Lead the design, implementation, resource optimization, and lifecycle management of OpenShift Container environments, on-premises and cloud, to support diverse organizational needs.
  • Ansible Automation Platform: Lead the design, implementation, resource optimization, and lifecycle management of Ansible Automation Platform environments, on-premises and cloud, to support diverse organizational automation needs.
  • Security & Compliance: Lead monthly security patching and vulnerability management. Ensure the Unix and Linux hosting environment remains secure, compliant, and resilient.

  • Collaboration & Vendor Management: Work closely with internal teams and external vendors to support system deployments, upgrades, and service enhancements. Manage vendor relationships, contracts, and service level agreements (SLAs) to ensure high-quality support and cost-effective solutions.

What You'll Do

The Manager of Unix, Linux and Container Services is responsible for leading the design, support and governance of Michigan Medicine's Unix, Linux, and Container environments. This role ensures that Unix, Linux operating systems and OpenShift container environments are secure, cost-efficient, and aligned with organizational goals, supporting clinical, research, and administrative functions.

Reporting to the Director of Data Center Infrastructure, the Manager of Unix, Linux and Container Services provides technical leadership for the implementation of operating system deployments, security architecture, hybrid cloud solutions, and OpenShift container platforms. The Manager collaborates closely and works in partnership with Architecture, Security, Networking, Application, Windows, and Storage teams to ensure seamless on-premises and Cloud integration. This role is responsible for maintaining high availability, performance, and compliance with industry regulations such as HIPAA and NIST.

The Manager of the Unix Hosting Services Team within HITS Enterprise Infrastructure (EI) is a leadership role responsible for overseeing strategic direction, operational excellence, and continuous improvement of Unix, Linux and Container Services at Michigan Medicine. This role manages a team of 12 IT professionals, including senior systems architects and application programmers, in managing a complex environment of over 1,700 Unix and Linux servers across physical and virtual (VMWare) platforms and Azure Cloud. As well as critical infrastructure services such as OpenShift Cluster Platform, Ansible Automation Platform, and Cisco hardware management within MM Datacenters.

Required Qualifications*

  • 3 years in a managerial/supervisory or team lead role overseeing 5 or more direct reports.
  • Strong experience in Unix or Linux Servers and Container Orchestration administration.
