Job Description:

The Ultrasound Technologist provides excellent customer service by performing ultrasound examinations under the direction of a physician for identification of abnormalities leading to patient diagnosis.

As an Ultrasound Technologist at Intermountain Health, you will play a vital role in supporting our clinical team, ensuring our patients receive the best care by:

Essential Functions

  • Maintains American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) and modality-specific competency in all clinical and technical functions.  
  • Ensures proper patient identification, order verification, and prepares the patient for the exam. 
  • Performs exams per department protocol and reviews images for quality, clarity, and accuracy. 
  • Completes studies within acceptable time limits without compromising patient care or quality. Assists and instructs students and other Radiology Techs in exam protocols, procedures, positioning, and equipment.  
  • Assists and instructs students and other Radiology Techs in exam protocols, procedures, positioning, and equipment.  
  • Provides appropriate patient education, ensures patient comfort, and addresses concerns.
  • Practices appropriate infection control and sterile techniques.  
  • Understands and operates equipment and related information systems to ensure quality images.  
  • Keeps accurate records of patient information, procedures performed, and any adverse reactions.  
  • Follows protocols for medical necessity, coding, charging, consents, QC programs, and reporting equipment failures.
  • Demonstrates proficiency with all clinical equipment within the department and all exam types.
  • Exhibits good safety practices in body substance protection, cleaning of equipment, using proper sterile techniques, and removing any expired materials.
  • Thoroughly and accurately completes all required documentation, including time stamps and image storage.

Minimum Qualifications Ultrasound Tech I

  • Registered with the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) - Successful completion of one registry pertinent to the department beyond physics (options include OB, abdominal, neuro, breast, pediatric, and vascular)

  • Health Services\BCLS - Basic life support (Certification for Healthcare Providers)

PreferredQualifications Ultrasound Tech I

  • 1 or more years of experience.

Minimum Qualifications Ultrasound Tech II

  • Must have completed a minimum of two additional years of experience relevant to the department post obtaining Ultrasound Tech I. (Primary Children’s one of the two years must be pediatric experience)

  • American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) Registry - Successful completion of one additional registry pertinent to the department beyond Ultrasound Technologist I or (SPI + 2 registries). Options include Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB/GYN), abdominal, neuro, breast, pediatric, Vascular, or Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS). (Primary Children’s one of the two registries must be pediatric)

  • Health Services\BCLS - Basic life support (Certification for Healthcare Providers)

PreferredQualifications Ultrasound Tech II

  • Additional experience

Physical Requirements

  • Ongoing need for employee to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, identify equipment and supplies.
  • Frequent interactions with patient care providers, patients, and visitors that require employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, particularly during emergency situations.
  • Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy. This includes frequent computer use and typing for documenting patient care, accessing needed information, medication preparation, etc.
  • Expected to lift and utilize full range of movement to transfer patients. Will also bend to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies and equipment. Typically includes items of varying weights, up to and including heavy items.
  • Need to walk and assist with transporting/ambulating patients and obtaining and distributing supplies and equipment. This includes pushing/pulling gurneys and portable equipment, including heavy items. Often required to navigate crowded and busy rooms (full of equipment, power cords on the floor, etc.)
  • May be expected to stand in a stationary position for an extended period of time.
