Job Description:

As the UI Architect (MineStar Onboard), you will serve as the technical authority for user interface architecture across Caterpillar's onboard mining and construction platforms. You will collaborate closely with customers, Product Owners, System Architects, and UI/UX teams to translate complex operational needs into intuitive, scalable, and high-performance embedded user experiences.

In this role, you will define and evolve the UI architecture strategy, establishing reusable design patterns, shared component frameworks, and best practices that drive consistency and efficiency across MineStar Onboard products. You will play a critical role in bridging UI systems with onboard/embedded platforms and backend services, ensuring seamless integration, reliability, and performance in constrained environments.

As a hands-on technical leader, you will provide architectural governance, mentor engineering teams, and guide delivery across a scaled Agile environment - enabling predictable, high-quality releases while advancing Caterpillar's leadership in automation, autonomy, and digital innovation.

What You Will Do:
  • Drive UI Architecture Strategy: Lead the definition and evolution of scalable UI architecture, including component frameworks, navigation models, state management, and performance optimization strategies for embedded environments.
  • Translate Business and User Needs into Solutions: Partner with customers, Product Owners, and System Architects to analyze workflows, define requirements, and design user-centric UI solutions for complex onboard applications.
  • Enable Integration Across Systems: Provide expertise on integration between UI layers and onboard/embedded systems, APIs, and infrastructure - ensuring robust data contracts, error handling, security, and system reliability.
  • Establish Design Standards and Reuse: Drive consistency across MineStar products by creating and governing reusable UI patterns, shared components, and design standards that improve development efficiency and user experience.
  • Lead End-to-End UI Delivery: Oversee and contribute to the design, development, testing, and release of embedded web applications, ensuring high-quality, performant, and maintainable solutions.
  • Champion Quality and Best Practices: Define and promote automated testing strategies (unit, integration, end-to-end), performance benchmarks, and engineering best practices for UI development in embedded systems.
  • Provide Technical Leadership and Mentorship: Guide and mentor engineers across teams, conduct design reviews, and influence technical decisions to elevate overall UI engineering capability.
  • Own Architecture Artifacts and Governance: Develop and maintain architecture documentation, specifications, estimates, and validation artifacts to support alignment, scalability, and long-term sustainability.
  • Other duties as assigned by Caterpillar management.


What You Have (Basic Requirements):
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering (software, electrical, computer) or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and work experience in lieu of degree.
  • Communicating Complex Concepts: Knowledge of effective presentation tools and techniques to ensure clear understanding; ability to use summarization and simplification techniques to explain complex technical concepts in simple, clear language appropriate to the audience.
  • Effective Communications: Understanding of effective communication concepts, tools and techniques; ability to effectively transmit, receive, and accurately interpret ideas, information, and needs through the application of appropriate communication behaviors.
  • Technical Excellence: Knowledge of a given technology and various application methods; ability to develop and provide solutions to significant technical challenges.
    • Embedded web UI development using HTML5, CSS, TypeScript/JavaScript, and Angular.
    • Strong UI architecture skills including navigation models, state management, shared component governance, and versioning strategies.
    • Experience with Web Components and micro-fronted styled UI composition.
    • Experience with 3D and map-based visualization using WebGL, OpenLayers, and/or three.js.
    • Performance optimization for embedded environments (startup time, rendering performance, memory constraints).
    • Automated UI testing practices including unit, component, integration, and end-to-end testing.
    • Understanding of API integration, error handling, logging/telemetry, and secure UI design principles.
  • Strategic Thinking: Knowledge of the importance of "big picture" thinking and planning; ability to apply organizational acumen and competitiveness to identify and maintain focus on key success factors for the organization.
  • Influencing Through Expertise: Knowledge of effective influencing tactics and strategies; ability to use these to deepen own expertise and impact or challenge decisions within and outside own organization.
  • Software Product Design/Architecture: Knowledge of software product design; ability to convert market requirements into software product design.
    • Demonstrated extensive professional experience as a web application developer and/or UI Architect (or equivalent) delivering production software.
    • Demonstrated experience developing embedded web applications using HTML5 and Angular.
  • Artificial Intelligence: Knowledge of the concepts, technologies and methodologies of artificial intelligence (AI); ability to develop, implement and/or apply artificial intelligence products and services in specific industry domain to achieve business goals.


What Will Set You Apart (Preferred Qualifications):
  • Fluency in English and French (both written and spoken) is preferred to effectively communicate with diverse stakeholders and ensure accurate interpretation of information.
  • Previous experience in C++ programming.
  • Previous experience using scripting languages (e.g., Python).
  • Previous experience with GNSS positioning, Wi-Fi, TCP/IP, UDP, SSL.
  • Previous experience using real-time operating systems.
  • Previous familiarity with WebAssembly.
