This position provides leadership and communication between the Drill Foreman, Supervisor, and General Manager. The Operations Manager is responsible for the overall operation of a dedicated crew utilizing a large directional drills (various sizes, methods, and terrains) on travel-based projects throughout the Midwest and potentially nationwide. The goal is to ensure jobs are progressing as scheduled and completed safely, on time, and within budget.

What you'll do

Team Leadership & Management
  • Direct and supervise the daily activities of the traveling directional drill crews.
  • Provide leadership and communication between the Drill Foreman, Supervisor, and Executive Management.
  • In coordination with Human Resources, complete the employee performance process, including providing timely positive and negative feedback and accurately documenting this information.
  • Create individual employee development plans and seek/implement opportunities for employee development.
  • Perform the duties of any field personnel as needed.

Project and Production Oversight
  • Ensure Foreman and Supervisors are knowledgeable regarding the scope of a job and its contract.
  • Schedule resources (employee, material, and subcontractors) in logical steps and budget time required to meet production deadlines.
  • Track weekly crew footage and production.
  • Communicate progress and costs regarding jobs to the General Manager.
  • Recommend changes to the work schedule to ensure jobs will be completed on time and to the customers' requirements.
  • Complete timely submission of "as builts" and redlines.

Equipment & Operations
  • Monitor equipment location and utilization.
  • Complete all equipment scheduling, including maintenance and procurement, using cost vs benefit analysis.
  • Train new and existing employees in directional drill operation, procedure, and process.
  • Monitor work and quality control programs to ensure compliance with contract terms and quality standards.

Safety & Compliance
  • In coordination with the Safety & Health Specialist, communicate and enforce safety initiatives and DOT compliance.
  • Ensure all environmental requirements are met, including obtaining permits and all required training is conducted prior to starting a job.
  • Obtain all necessary permits and licenses.


What you'll need

  • Minimum of 5 years directional drill experience preferred, or a minimum of 5 years construction management experience preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge and experience with various directional drills, including Vermeer, Ditch Witch, DCI, and Subsite locating systems.
  • Mechanical knowledge of directional drills, vacs, and other equipment on jobsites.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, governmental regulations, and technical documents such as contracts, prints, and descriptions.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as profitability and market analysis.
  • Knowledge and experience in contract management systems, project management software, Internet software, spreadsheet, and word processing software required.
  • Travel is required.
  • Must maintain a current DOT health card certificate.
  • Must maintain a valid driver's license and a good driving record.
  • OSHA 30 certification required.
  • Class A CDL license is preferred.

Work Environment/Physical Demands
  • Ability to frequently stand and sit.
  • Ability to occasionally kneel, squat, bend, and twist.
  • Ability to safely lift to 25 lbs. consistently, occasionally lift to 50 lbs., and rarely lift to 75 lbs.
  • Ability to safely wear job-specific Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including eye, hearing, head, respiratory, and foot protection, as well as appropriate high visibility clothing.
  • Ability to occasionally work in adverse weather conditions and on slippery, uneven, and/or other irregular surfaces.

The wage range for Traveling Directional Drill Operations Manager is $120,000.00 - $150,000.00
