ABOUT THE POSITION

Transportation Planner - Project Manager | Washington, DC | Tysons, Richmond, Williamsburg or Virginia Beach, VA

VHB's growing Mid-Atlantic operation is seeking a Transportation Planner or Engineer - Project Manager to join our Virginia Transportation Systems team. The selected candidate will work with VHB's passionate team of engineers, planners, and designers on a variety of projects across a broad cross-section of markets. This includes partnering with public and private clients at the federal, state, and local levels to improve mobility, enhance communities, boost economic vitality, and balance development and infrastructure needs with environmental stewardship.

This position is designed for a 11+ year professional with a strong technical foundation in transportation planning and traffic operations-and a desire to contribute to mentorship and project management for our Virginia strategic initiatives, particularly in the local government market. You'll work closely with senior leadership, taking on key project responsibilities and supporting a balanced team structure and advancing our long-term business development goals.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead multimodal transportation projects including corridor studies, safety audits, and operations analyses.
  • Review technical traffic engineering work conducted by others.
  • Perform and manage safety-focused planning efforts.
  • Lead development of technical memoranda, reports, graphics, and presentations that communicate complex concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Support the development of transportation policies and programs for Virginia communities.
  • Lead public and stakeholder engagement, including workshops, open houses, small group meetings, and online engagement.
  • Manage tasks, budgets, and schedules for defined components of larger projects; contribute to project management activities.
  • Contribute to proposals, project scopes, budgets, and schedules.
  • Serve as a task or discipline lead on multidisciplinary projects.
  • Manage projects and staff on technical and professional growth.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to support VHB's Mid-Atlantic strategic initiatives.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Urban Planning, Civil Engineering, Transportation Planning, or a related field
  • 11+ years of experience in transportation planning/engineering (consulting preferred)
  • Professional planning certification or PE required (i.e., American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP)
  • Experience leading teams and/or projects
  • Supervisory experience preferred
  • Experience with Virginia transportation clients and agencies is required

The base salary range for this position is $120,000 to $185,000 for Virginia and DC offices. This offer is determined based on a number of job-related factors including internal comparators, skills, education, training, credentials, experience, scope and complexity of role responsibilities and geographic location.
