This is a unique opportunity to contribute to some of the most significant transportation and economic infrastructure projects that connect northern communities, support economic growth, and improve safe, reliable movement across some of Canada's most challenging environments. The work may include roads, highways, bridges, and major corridor initiatives in Northern Canada, including current and future projectswork associated with the Mackenzie Valley Highway, Grays Bay Road and Port, and the broader Arctic Economic Security Corridor. From all-season road access and highway improvements to bridge crossings, drainage, and related civil infrastructure. Planning resilient transportation systems that are community infrastructure directly support daily life, access to essential to community connectivity, services, housing growth, emergency response, resource development, and long-term economic sustainability.

As part of our North of 60 Engineering team, you will help shape infrastructure solutions in some of Canada's most complex and meaningful project environments, where engineering, environmental stewardship, Indigenous partnership, constructability, and logistics all come together. This role offers the chance to contribute to nationally significant corridor projects while building strong relationships with territorial governments, Indigenous organizations, industry partners, and multidisciplinary teams across Canada.

Stantec is seeking a Transportation Engineer to join our growing engineering practice in Yellowknife or Whitehorse.

Opportunity provides for a hybrid work environment. In office presence is expected based on project needs, client meetings, and team collaboration.

Your Key Responsibilities

• Lead and prepare complex engineering designs, plans, and drawings for a variety of projects, including urban and rural roadways, highways, and intersections.
• Support planning, design, and delivery of major northern transportation corridors, including all-season highways, resource access roads, ports, bridges, and community infrastructure.
• Apply practical northern design considerations, including permafrost terrain, seasonal access, remote logistics, constructability, and resilience to changing climate conditions.
• Apply advanced knowledge of transportation engineering principles and stay current on evolving methods and technologies.
• Coordinate effectively with Project Managers, multidisciplinary teams, and clients.
• Responsible for the design, quality reviews, and sealing of assigned projects.
• Supervise and mentor engineers, CAD staff, and junior team members, providing leadership, guidance, and professional development.

Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credentials

• Proven ability to solve complex problems using sound judgment, creativity, and innovation.
• Proficiency with CADD technologies, including MicroStation, PowerGEOPAK, and OpenRoads 3D modeling
• Strong understanding of design and plan production processes for northern transportation infrastructure, with familiarity in the Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut project delivery considered an asset.
• Experience working on complex linear infrastructure projects in remote or cold-region environments, including projects involving Indigenous engagement, regulatory processes, and multidisciplinary coordination.
• Strong communication skills-both verbal and written-with the ability to convey ideas, design issues, and solutions clearly.
• Ability to review the work of others for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with design standards.
• Highly organized with excellent time management skills and a commitment to meeting project deadlines and budgets.
• Collaborative, detail-oriented, and self-motivated with a positive attitude and a passion for team success.

Education and Experience

• Education: Bachelor's Degree (or foreign equivalent) in Civil Engineering, Transportation, or a related field is required.
• Professional Licensure: Professional Engineer designation in Canada, or eligibility for registration in Yukon and/or the Northwest Territories, is preferred.
• Experience: Minimum of 6 years of experience in highway/roadway design is preferred, with northern, remote, or cold-region transportation project experience considered a strong asset.

This position may be based out of our Whitehorse, Yukon or Yellowknife, Northwest Territories office, with flexibility to work in a hybrid environment that includes a mix of remote and in- office work. Typical office work involves working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include travel to remote northern communities and project sites, with exposure to inclement weather, seasonal access constraints, and cold-region conditions. Travel may be required for client meetings, community engagement, scoping assignments, field investigations, and construction or project site visits.
