Title: Transportation Manager

Job Summary:

This role coordinates logistics for assets across company-wide operations and provides active analytics partnering and leading in improving specimen and supply movement. The position owns the end-to-end development of reporting infrastructure, uses data to identify trends and inbound/outbound inefficiencies, and partners cross-functionally to implement solutions that improve efficiency, service, and cost-effectiveness. The work directly supports operational performance and has a measurable impact on NMS Labs' bottom line.

Requirements:

Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain Management, Logistics, Business Administration, or a related field.

Required:

  • 5-7 years of experience in transportation planning or logistics.
  • Transportation + distribution experience (carrier contracting, SLAs)
  • Strong process design (Lean/continuous improvement)


Preferred -

  • Healthcare/lab logistics experience


Major Duties and Responsibilities:

Process excellence

  • Map "kit-to-lab-to-result" physical flow and remove friction:
    • Reduce touches, eliminate handoffs, standardize packaging, etc.
  • Establish work instruction based on regulation adherence and best practices for packaging, labeling, etc.
    • Guide internal and external clients on best practices
  • Create and adjust Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to drive continuous improvement.
    • Analyze shipment data and monitor metrics, including cost per shipment, accessorial fees, client adherence to shipping best practices, shipment volume trends, late deliveries, etc.
    • Manage freight invoice verification and exception resolution processes by validating carrier charges against transportation contracts and shipment data.
    • Coordinate with cross-functional teams and logistics partners to investigate discrepancies, implement corrective measures, and improve transportation billing accuracy, efficiencies and cost controls.
    • Generate reports and provide insights to senior management on transportation performance and improvement opportunities.
  • Lead continuous improvement projects tied to:
    • On-time delivery, accessioning readiness, specimen integrity, cost per shipment


Strategy & governance

  • Define the logistics operating model (3PL, courier, service coverage) and build/own carrier strategy: contracts, performance SLAs, escalation playbooks
  • Carrier Management:
    • Manage relationships with and collaborate with 3PL, carriers and courier partners, to ensure shipments meet company objectives for cost, service, and operational efficiency.
    • Support negotiation of transportation rates and service agreements with 3PL/carriers.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact to troubleshoot carrier issues, inbound or outbound, domestically or internationally, and manage through resolution
  • Create and operate a cross-functional specimen logistics council (Ops, Accessioning, Client Services, Compliance, IT)


Risk & compliance

  • Collaborate with Quality Assurance to define and audit compliance requirements for:
    • Chain-of-custody, controlled substances, biohazard handling (as applicable)
  • Own incident response for:
    • temperature excursions, lost specimens, compromised custody, mislabels
  • Stay updated on industry regulations and best practices and adjust logistics operating model as necessary
  • Identify potential risks in the transportation process and develop mitigation strategies.
  • Ensure contingency plans are in place for transportation disruptions.


Acts as change agent and advocate for Procurement as a value-added partner.

  • Knowledge of transportation regulated environments and documentation discipline
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with individuals at all organizational levels.
  • Strong analytical skills, compiling and interpreting complex data, ability to resolve conflicts in data, produce accurate, actionable results with moderate supervision.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present complex data clearly to diverse audiences.
  • Proven time-management skills with the ability to prioritize and work effectively on multiple projects concurrently.
  • Cold-chain / temperature-controlled shipping exposure
  • Ability to manage vendors and conduct negotiations
  • Ability to lead change


Physical Demands:

  • Ability to talk, hear, stand, reach with hands and arms, and use hands and fingers to manipulate instrument/equipment controls, computer keyboard, objects, tools or controls.
  • Able to move from one work location to another to sit and stand, sometimes for extended periods of time.
