Transmission Customer Service - Retail Project Engineer Posting

Work Location:

This position is located in the APC Headquarters of Birmingham, AL. This position will require a mix of field and office work.

Position Summary:

This position serves as the primary Transmission representative for retail customer projects and service requests, leading the evaluation, development, and implementation of technical solutions from initial assessment through project completion. The successful candidate will partner with Customers and cross functional stakeholders across Transmission, Distribution, Power Contracts, Marketing, Operations, Engineering, Construction, Power Quality, Metering, and Leadership to evaluate service needs, develop customer-focused solutions, and successfully deliver transmission projects.

This role is responsible for coordinating all aspects of project delivery, including technical scope development, engineering coordination, budgeting, scheduling, construction support, and stakeholder communications. The position requires strong leadership, project management, and customer relationship skills to successfully balance customer expectations with Alabama Power Company and Southern Company business objectives.

The successful candidate will serve as a trusted advisor and primary point of contact for customers connected to Alabama Power Company's transmission system while coordinating efforts across multiple organizations to deliver safe, reliable, and cost-effective solutions. This role provides broad exposure to transmission planning, engineering, operations, construction, and customer service functions, and offers the opportunity to lead strategic customer initiatives that support Alabama Power Company's and Southern Company's long-term growth objectives.

Travel: Up to 25% travel should be expected within the Alabama Power Company footprint. Frequency will be dictated by the specific project(s) supported.

Job Experience and Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution is preferred. Equivalent applicable experience in Transmission Engineering, Operations, Construction, or Project Management may be considered.
  • Experience in Transmission Planning, Substation Design, Transmission Line Design, Operations, Construction, Maintenance, Protection & Control, Generation, Transmission Support, or Project Management is preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience leading projects, coordinating cross-functional teams, and managing competing priorities.
  • Experience working directly with customers, stakeholders, or service requests is preferred.
  • Strong communication, relationship-building, and problem-solving skills.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification and/or Professional Engineer (PE) licensure is a plus.


Technical Experience Requirements:

  • Working knowledge of planning, design, construction, operations, and maintenance processes.
  • Ability to evaluate customer service requests and develop technically sound, reliable, and cost-effective solutions that meet both customer and Company objectives.
  • Understanding of transmission system fundamentals, engineering principles, electric operating practices, construction practices, land requirements, and applicable regulations.
  • Knowledge of project financial management, including budgeting, forecasting, project billing, capital expenditures, transfers, and cost tracking.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to assess alternatives, identify risks, evaluate financial impacts, and recommend practical solutions.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, priorities, and competing deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to communicate technical, operational, and financial information effectively to customers, leadership, and cross-functional stakeholders.
