Full Job Description
The Opportunity

Keyano College's University Studies department is currently seeking a Laboratory Aide to join their dynamic team on a temporary basis. The Laboratory Aide is responsible for providing laboratory support for Earth and Atmospheric Sciences (EAS) and Environmental Technology (ENVT) courses with laboratory components. This temporary role starts as soon as possible and will be for up to three (3) months. This role is required to work full-time hours. Note: this is not a remote or hybrid work opportunity, you will be required to work on campus and relocate to Fort McMurray, AB.

Duties & Responsibilities
• Prepare and revise detailed operating procedures for EAS and ENVT laboratory exercises, including equipment, reagents, and safety protocols. • Consult with the Laboratory Technician on reagent preparation, waste management, and chemical hazards, updating procedures accordingly. • Calculate the required amounts of reagents and supplies based on class sizes for each lab exercise. • Schedule and organize preparation tasks to ensure all necessary reagents and supplies are available on time. • Operate and maintain equipment such as the slab saw, sieve shaker, and ice auger, including outdoor operation as needed. • Set up and take down laboratory exercises by preparing and labeling all necessary reagents, supplies, and equipment. • Clean and return all used equipment, reagents, and supplies to their proper storage locations after each lab exercise. • Maintain and clean student workspaces, fume hoods, and glassware following proper safety and precautionary measures. • Perform routine inventory checks of chemicals, glassware, and lab supplies, ensuring all are properly stocked and up-to-date. • Maintain laboratory consumables, such as distilled water, disinfectants, and gloves, and ensure the overall cleanliness of the lab. • Care for living materials such as plants, animals, protozoa, and algae, ensuring their proper maintenance and habitat conditions. • Prepare simple chemical solutions and media under the supervision of the Lab Technician, following established procedures.

Qualifications
• Completion of a 2-year Community/Technical/Vocational College program in Environmental Technician/Technologist, or a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Earth Science or Environmental Science is preferred. • Minimum of 6 months of relevant laboratory experience. Laboratory experience gained in laboratory coursework during a BSc will be considered. • Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) certification (2-hour online training) and Biosafety training (1-hour in-house session). • Possesses skills and Knowledge of Basic principles of laboratory science. • Familiarity with materials, supplies, and equipment, particularly chemicals and associated hazards. • Understanding of laboratory safety protocols and procedures. • Ability to operate and maintain specific lab equipment (e.g., slab saw, sieve shaker, ice auger). Please note that if your education was received internationally, upon hire we will require you to provide an international education assessment completed through WES, IQAS or one of the other IRCC approved designated organization.

Compensation and Benefits
• Compensation is $40.60 per hour (CUPE TS7 Temporary rate)
